
Security and Safety Associate (FLSD) (1 Day/ Sunday's Only)
Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well-being of artists and the communities to which they serve. Our new facilities house fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans. In 2025, PHA expects to welcome in thousands of patrons as the building becomes a center for art and performance. Over the next few years, PHA will see growth and expansion in all areas of business and an increased focus on revenue generation.
Powerhouse Arts is seeking a Security and Safety Associate to join our team. This individual will serve as an FLSD and represent the organization at the Security Desk. This position reports to the Security and Safety Administrator.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Emergency & Fire Safety Operations
- Monitor the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) continuously and respond to all alarms (fire, supervisory, trouble).
- Maintain fire alarm logbooks and make daily entries when required.
- Execute the building’s Comprehensive Fire Safety and Emergency Action Plan during emergencies.
- Report to the Fire Command Station and coordinate with FDNY, EMS, and other first responders.
- Perform routine fire drills, inspections, and testing of life safety equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, exit signs, emergency lighting, sprinkler systems).
- Coordinate with the Engineering Team for scheduled inspections of fire alarm and suppression systems.
Security & Surveillance
- Monitor CCTV for suspicious or concerning activities.
- Conduct regular visual inspections of the facility and surrounding grounds to identify fire and safety hazards.
- Respond to safety-related issues in coordination with Facilities and Public Safety.
Communication & Coordination
- Act as a liaison with building personnel, FDNY, and NYPD during emergencies.
- Provide clear announcements and direct personnel actions during emergencies.
- Maintain accurate daily logs, fire records, and warden sign-in sheets.
- Offer professional, customer-service-oriented interactions with staff, guests, and during special events.

Experience & Licensing
- 2-3 years holding a FLSD License, with at least 5 years working in security; background in a major cultural institution is a plus.
- Possession of a valid NYS Security Guard License.
- Must hold FDNY F89, T89, or Z89 certification (with Z89 acceptable if combined with 3+ years of fire and life safety experience).
- Valid 8 and 16 Hour NYS Required Training Certificates.
- Preparedness to take on-site certifying test after 3 months of employment.
Skills & Attributes
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow and convey complex instructions with consistency and attention to detail.
- Basic technical proficiency (MS Office, Google Docs preferred).
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively in creative and culturally diverse environments.
- Flexibility to work extended shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $25-28/hr. At this time, we are looking to fill (1) shift on Sunday from 4 pm-12 am. The right candidate will be added to on the on-call list with shifts available Monday- Sunday.
