Job overview
The Communication and Engagement Officer will play a key role in shaping how PREreview shows up in the world. This position is responsible for managing external communications and deepening engagement with our community—ensuring our mission, values, and programs are shared clearly, consistently, and with purpose.
You will lead the development and implementation of strategies to connect with our diverse, global audience—including researchers, students, publishers, funders, and allies in the broader open scholarship ecosystem. This includes managing communication across channels such as social media, newsletters, Slack, events, and workshops.
In collaboration with the Head of Community and Executive Director, you will also help plan, host, and facilitate community-centered initiatives like Live Reviews, training workshops, and other events designed to foster inclusive participation and meaningful dialogue. This role offers a unique opportunity to support and grow a vibrant community dedicated to transforming how research is shared, reviewed, and valued.
Key responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Head of Community to design and implement a thoughtful, inclusive communication and engagement strategy that reflects PREreview’s mission and values.
- Manage and grow PREreview’s presence across social media platforms, ensuring consistent, accessible, and impactful messaging.
- Foster a welcoming and vibrant online community by actively engaging with members on Slack and other platforms.
- Partner with the Product Team to communicate new features or updates, gather community feedback, and support strategies that increase awareness and use of PREreview’s tools.
- Support the planning, coordination, and co-facilitation of virtual and in-person workshops, talks, and events, including Live Reviews and training sessions.
- Monitor engagement metrics and community feedback to assess impact and inform continuous improvement in communication and outreach strategies.
- Work collaboratively across the organization, supporting teammates and contributing to a flexible, caring, and responsive team culture—especially important in a small, mission-driven nonprofit.
- Engage daily with the rest of the team, gathering input and communicating priorities and needs.
- Engage daily on community channels, specifically monitoring external activity, and actively reach out to relevant stakeholders on relevant platforms.
Relevant experience and qualifications

Required or Strongly Preferred:
- Proven ability to tell compelling, accessible stories that translate complex ideas for diverse, global audiences.
- A strong understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) principles, and the ability to communicate these concepts in ways that inform and inspire.
- Familiarity with open scholarship practices—such as open access publishing, open data, or open research infrastructure—and a genuine interest in promoting more equitable research ecosystems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills across formats and platforms.
- Demonstrated experience managing social media and online communities, with a track record of increasing engagement and reach.
- Passion for community building, collaboration, and co-creation, especially in digital or academic spaces.
- Awareness of the structural barriers that limit access and participation in research, and a commitment to helping dismantle them.
- Experience with content strategy, planning, and creation (e.g., blog posts, newsletters, social media campaigns).
- Comfort and confidence with public speaking, including facilitating webinars, trainings, or workshops online and/or in person.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
Nice to Have:
- Fluency or proficiency in a language other than English—particularly Spanish and/or Portuguese.
- Scientific training at the postgraduate level (e.g., Master’s or Ph.D.) and/or a solid understanding of the academic research landscape.
Position Details and Compensation
This is a 2-year grant-funded position, with the possibility of extension depending on organizational needs, funding availability, and individual performance.
We are hiring for a full-time role (approximately 40 hours per week), with an annual salary ranging from $67,000 to $77,000 USD, commensurate with experience. Benefits are provided through TriNet (for U.S.-based employees) or Remote.com (for international employees), and include:

PREreview is a fully remote organization with team members currently based across the U.S. and the U.K. The successful candidate can be based in any of the countries supported by Remote.com, provided they have existing authorization to work in their country of residence, as we are not able to sponsor visas at this time.
To support team collaboration, the candidate’s work hours must overlap with the 2pm–7pm UTC window.
