
Head of Engineering

We’re looking for a Head of Engineering to lead the delivery of secure, reliable, and scalable technology platforms across payments, e-commerce, and digital gifting. Reporting to the CTO, you’ll lead a large and talented team of onshore and offshore engineers, delivering excellence through modern practices, a strong culture, and close partnership with the business.
A core part of your role will be embedding AI into Product and Engineering SDLC practices and supporting teams across the broader business to unlock meaningful productivity gains and new capabilities.
What You’ll Do
Lead a High-Performing Engineering Organisation
- Foster a culture of ownership, trust, learning, empowerment, collaboration, and accountability
- Define team structures, squad boundaries, and ways of working to support scalable, high-performing delivery across distributed teams
- Reduce key-person dependencies through knowledge sharing and capability building
Drive AI Transformation & Enablement
- Work with the Delivery Team to define and drive the adoption of AI tools and workflows to improve delivery productivity, quality, and speed to market
- Partner with Product, Operations, Customer, and other business functions to identify and deliver practical AI use cases
- Enable teams across the organisation to effectively adopt AI through tooling, training, and best practices
- Establish guardrails, governance, and standards for responsible and scalable AI usage
- Evaluate emerging AI technologies and translate them into real business impact
Partner With the Business
- Act as a trusted engineering partner to Product and Technology teams
- Be accountable for delivering committed outcomes and navigating complex challenges
- Communicate risks, dependencies, and trade-offs clearly
- Advocate for engineering quality, reliability, and delivery efficiency
Set the Technical Direction
- Define modern engineering standards and technical practices that drive efficiency, quality, and innovation
- Shape architecture and technology choices aligned to global scale and business needs
- Balance innovation, technical debt, and platform reliability to deliver sustainable solutions
- Continuously improve DevOps, CI/CD, DevEx, and automation practices
Lead Engineering Delivery
- Own and deliver the engineering roadmap aligned to organisational strategy
- Ensure distributed teams deliver consistently across feature development, platform improvements, and operational needs
- Remove bottlenecks across onshore and offshore teams through improved processes, tooling, and collaboration
Solution Reliability & Quality
- Uphold engineering standards and guardrails across all teams
- Lead post-incident and retrospective reviews to improve observability, operability, and resilience
- Ensure consistent delivery quality, performance, and security at scale
About You
- Experienced in leading large, distributed engineering teams across onshore and offshore environments
- Strong technical background in AWS, microservices, cloud-native systems, CI/CD, DevOps, DevEx, observability, and secure coding practices
- Proven track record of delivering complex initiatives with high quality and predictable outcomes
- Skilled in shaping engineering operating models and enabling Engineering Managers and leaders
- Commercially minded, with the ability to influence stakeholders and make pragmatic trade-offs
Proven Track Record in AI & Transformation
- Proven experience in the application of AI within Engineering and Delivery practices to increase speed to market and scale teams without impacting quality or security
- Enabling the adoption of AI across broader business functions and within customer experiences
- Ability to translate emerging technology into tangible business outcomes while assessing the potential risks and mitigants
