Position Overview:
Prime Medicine is seeking a Senior Manager, R&D Informatics to lead and enhance our research data systems, ensuring seamless digital infrastructure and data management to support cutting-edge gene editing research. This role is pivotal in integrating advanced informatics platforms, optimizing workflows, and driving digital transformation across R&D.

This position will combine hands-on technical responsibilities as well as managerial responsibilities over a small team of software engineers and consultants supporting all R&D Informatics needs.  The Senior Manager will be expected to directly contribute to software development, requirement gathering/ prioritization, data integration, ELN workflows, AI/ML implementation, and informatics system improvements, while also mentoring and guiding their team.

Additionally, this role will manage vendor relationships, drive AI/ML adoption, and oversee the R&D Informatics Helpdesk to ensure seamless support across the organization. This position reports to the VP, IT/Informatics.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Hands-On Contribution:

  • Develop and execute an R&D informatics strategy, aligned with Prime Medicine’s R&D operational goals.
  • Lead and manage a small team of software engineers and consultants supporting informatics needs across all R&D including Computational Science, Sequencing Screening teams.
  • Provide hands-on contributions in scientific software development, informatics platform configuration, and AI/ML-driven data analytics.
  • Drive the adoption of innovative informatics solutions, including AI/ML-driven automation and data insights.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and trends to ensure informatics capabilities remain at the forefront of industry advancements.

Workflow, Software Development & Process Optimization:

  • Oversee the design and development of computational tools, data pipelines, and software solutions to support R&D teams.
  • Lead workflow and process mapping across departments to optimize data flow and scientific operations.
  • Personally contribute to software and data engineering efforts, ensuring that tools are robust, scalable, and aligned with research objectives.
  • Ensure that data models and templates are scalable, efficient, and AI/ML-ready, enabling predictive analytics and automation.

Data Management, AI & Advanced Analytics:

  • Oversee the capture, structuring, and analysis of R&D data using Benchling, Spotfire, and other relevant platforms.
  • Develop and implement strategies for automated data ingestion, integration, and AI-powered analytics to ensure data consistency and integrity.
  • Collaborate hands-on with computational biologists, sequencing experts, and data scientists to develop AI/ML-based solutions for scientific data analysis.
  • Establish best practices for structured data storage, governance, and retrieval to support AI/ML model training and deployment.

Vendor & System Management:

  • Serve as the primary contact for informatics and AI/ML vendors, managing relationships and negotiating contracts to ensure cost-effective and high-quality solutions.
  • Partner with software providers to enhance product functionality based on R&D and AI/ML needs.

Informatics Helpdesk & Support:

  • Oversee and enhance the R&D Informatics Helpdesk, ensuring timely and effective issue resolution for internal teams.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Act as a liaison between IT, Research, Data Science, and other business units to ensure informatics solutions are seamlessly integrated into broader organizational processes.
  • Work directly with AI/ML teams to ensure models are trained on high-quality data and deployed effectively within R&D workflows.

Compliance & Best Practices:

  • Ensure all informatics and AI/ML-driven solutions comply with regulatory requirements (e.g., GxP, FDA, 21 CFR Part 11, GDPR) and industry best practices.
  • Stay informed about AI/ML ethics, data privacy standards, and regulatory guidelines for machine learning in life sciences.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Informatics, Computer Science, Data Science, AI/ML, Bioinformatics, or Life Sciences.
  • Deep expertise in Benchling, Spotfire, or similar R&D informatics platforms.
  • Experience leading a team of software engineers and consultants supporting computational science, sequencing, and screening efforts.
  • Hands-on experience with scientific software development, AI/ML model implementation, or data engineering in biotech/pharma R&D.
  • 5+ years of experience in scientific informatics, data management, or AI/ML applications for R&D.
  • Strong background in workflow/process mapping, data modeling, and analytics.
  • Experience managing external vendors and contracts.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including team mentorship, stakeholder engagement, and project management.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with an ability to translate technical needs into actionable informatics strategies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry with a deep understanding of R&D workflows, preferably within a cell and gene therapy environment.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML model development, cloud-based computing platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), and data engineering pipelines.
  • Prior experience in a managerial or leadership role within R&D informatics.
  • Knowledge of FAIR data principles and how they apply to AI/ML model training and deployment.
