Policy Analyst

Are you a Research and Policy Analyst looking to make a big impact on a mission-driven company? Do you thrive working in the earlier stages of a start-up?

Propel is on a mission to empower low-income Americans by simplifying access to government benefits with modern technology. All of our users deserve first-class experiences in their daily interactions with the social safety net and financial services. We're a passionate team of 100 Propellers - all working to help our users get through the month, every month. We’re looking for a detail-oriented Policy Analyst to help build Propel’s profile serving our users and elevating their voice in policy conversations about them.

This role is an essential part of Propel’s public policy team and plays a critical role in distilling the voice and experience of more than 5 million low-income Americans into research that shapes the public narrative and our product decisions. We are looking for a detail-oriented self-starter who can crunch numbers and identify powerful narratives based on information shared with us by our users. The ideal candidate can navigate a steep learning curve and quickly grow to suggest process improvements that increase the team’s efficiency and impact

Here's how you'll impact the company:

  • Lead User Surveys: Design, execute, and analyze ongoing & unique surveys to understand user experiences and concerns, producing public reports that contribute to safety net policy discussions.
  • Champion User Advocacy: Manage and implement campaigns to engage users in policy decisions that affect them, driving advocacy efforts at local and national levels.
  • Monitor Policy Developments: Track key federal and state policies and program implementations that impact the financial health of low-income households, providing actionable insights to the team.
  • Strengthen Partnerships: Author newsletters and contribute to Propel’s social media presence to enhance communication with governmental and non-governmental partners.

Requirements:

  • 2-4 years experience performing research, data, and/or policy analysis
  • Proficiency with statistical methods and tools to analyze policy impacts
  • Ability to gather, interpret, and synthesize complex information from a wide array of sources.
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate complex information clearly and concisely in reports, briefs, and presentations.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Familiarity with safety net programs and public policy is a plus

At Propel, you'll enjoy:

  • Meaningful work and a strong shared sense of mission
  • Remote-friendly work environment with a dog-friendly office in Downtown Brooklyn and satellite offices in San Francisco and Salt Lake City. The team meets in-person for optional retreats.
  • 20 Days of PTO
  • 4% 401K match
  • $10k lifetime spend towards Carrot Fertility
  • Excellent Medical, Dental and Vision options
  • Other health and mental health focused benefits and perks
  • Propel builds compensation bands referencing the 75th percentile of compensation for companies like us. Expected compensation for the role as scoped is $80,000 - $90,000 and will be based on how a candidate matches to our internal leveling guide. Bands may be expanded if someone is leveled more senior than the role was initially scoped.

  • We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team, and welcome applicants from all backgrounds and abilities.
  • We're currently accepting applications from the states we have an established entity, which includes California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.

More About Propel

We believe that Americans with limited income deserve modern, respectful, and effective experiences around their government benefits and money. Unfortunately, the status quo often fails to treat them as first-class citizens in their daily interactions around the social safety net and financial services. The tech industry hasn’t pulled its weight in solving the problems faced by low-income Americans.

Propel’s mission is to change that. We’ve built Providers, the single most popular app in the country built specifically for low-income Americans. Over 5 million families each month use Providers to seamlessly manage their government benefits (programs like SNAP, commonly known as food stamps), conduct their banking, and save and earn money. Providers has been recognized by the White House, featured on the front page of the NYTimes, and carries over 500,000 five star reviews.

Propel is a for-profit, venture-backed start-up company that holds its social mission at its core. We’re proud to be supported by a blend of nonprofits, impact investors, and world-class investors, including the Robin Hood Foundation, Andreessen Horowitz, Nyca Partners, Financial Health Network, JPMorganChase, Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, and Nas. For us to build a self-sustaining and profitable business, we need to deeply understand our user’s needs and build multiple successful products addressing those needs. If this challenge appeals to you, we’d love to talk!

Join us, and let's build something amazing together!

Demographic Questions

At Propel, we believe that an environment that is diverse, inclusive, and equitable drives us towards the best product and business decisions that allow us to effectively and consciously serve our mission and our users. As a social enterprise, we also recognize that caring about DEI is quite simply the right thing to do.

The people that use our products are diverse in many ways - gender, age, race, sexual orientation, religion, disability status, and more. We explicitly aim to reflect that with our team composition, though we aren’t there yet. That’s why we are actively working to make sure our job descriptions are inclusive, our sourcing nets are widely cast, and our interview process is equitable and fair to all.

We particularly value those with lived experiences around financial hardship and safety net programs. While people from all backgrounds can contribute to Propel’s mission, we know that those who come from the communities we serve have an incredibly powerful and unique perspective.

Your responses will be used (in aggregate only) to help us identify areas of improvement in our process. Your responses will not be associated with your specific application and will not in any way be used in the hiring decision.
