Senior Recruiter
About Us
Propel is a 100-person tech company for people who receive government benefits. We build software that strengthens the safety net in America and envision a future where every American has the tools and resources they need to thrive.
The Role
Are you passionate about connecting great people to meaningful work? Do you thrive in fast-paced, mission-driven environments where you can take ownership of your craft and make a measurable impact?
We’re looking for a mission-driven Senior Recruiter to help us continue to scale thoughtfully and intentionally. You’ll be instrumental in building recruiting programs that attract incredible talent - people who care deeply about both our users’ experiences and our business impact.
In this role, you’ll partner closely with the VP of People and Talent Acquisition Manager to grow our team in ways that reflect our mission, values, and the communities we serve. We already have a system that is working; we need your help to continue to refine and improve it! We’re proud of our hiring system today with a 30 day average time to hire, 55 day average time to fill, 95% candidate satisfaction rating and a 90% offer acceptance rate.
You’ll be joining a close knit People Ops team. Our ideal candidate is a first-principles thinker who knows what great recruiting looks like and isn’t afraid to challenge and recalibrate when needed. You’re confident guiding hiring managers and helping them grow into capable, inclusive hiring leaders. Lastly, you understand that recruiting is the first step in the HR lifecycle - you’re excited about the opportunity to work on People Ops and DEI initiatives when time allows because you deeply care about the employee experience.
At our core, we believe everyone deserves a first-class experience - whether they’re accessing the social safety net, managing their finances, or applying to join our team. We’re committed to delivering that same level of care and excellence to our candidates and employees alike.
Here's how you'll impact the company:
- Strategic Partner to Hiring Managers: Go beyond the job description. You’ll help hiring managers clarify what they really need and shape the right role design, interview process, and success profile. You’ll bring strong judgment, curiosity, and the confidence to push for clarity when things are ambiguous.
- Full-Cycle Recruiting for Both Technical and Non-Technical Roles: You’ll own searches from end to end, including sourcing, interviewing, offer management, and closing. You’ll balance multiple pipelines at once with a sense of urgency and high accountability.
- Champion of Candidate Experience: Every touchpoint with Propel should feel human, transparent, and respectful. You’ll design and deliver a process where candidates feel seen and valued - even if they don’t get the job.
- Builder of Recruiting Systems and Practices: You’ll help improve our workflows, tools, and training to make the recruiting engine more efficient and scalable, particularly outbound efforts. You’ll share insights with the People team to drive smarter, faster, and more inclusive hiring.
- Mission Ambassador: You’ll tell Propel’s story to the world by communicating our values, vision, and impact in a way that inspires exceptional people to join our team.
Requirements
- 6+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience, including both technical and non-technical roles at a Series A to Series D startup (we prefer candidates with B2C, mobile and/or marketplace product experience)
- You love sourcing! You thrive figuring out creative ways to source strong candidates vs. only waiting for the right inbound candidate to come along
- You care about the craft of recruiting! You are a part of recruiting communities, you read articles on how to improve your craft, and you enjoy learning what’s new in our industry
- You’re experimenting with AI tools and already on your way to becoming an expert. We use Juicebox, Cursor, ChatGPT, Glean, and other AI tools internally
- You think like a product manager. You know know to prioritize, have strong time management skills, can anticipate needs before they happen, and know when to convince stakeholders using data
- Demonstrated ability to build trust and strong partnerships across all levels of a company
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on clarity and empathy
- Deep care for diversity, equity, and inclusion in every step of the recruiting process
At Propel, you’ll enjoy:
- Meaningful work and a strong shared sense of mission on a close knit team
- Propel builds compensation bands referencing the 75th percentile of compensation for companies like us. Expected compensation for this role is $130,000–$165,000, depending on how the candidate maps to our internal leveling framework
- A hybrid work environment with a dog-friendly office in Downtown Brooklyn
- 20 Days of PTO
- 4% 401K match
- $10k lifetime spend towards Carrot Fertility
- Excellent Medical, Dental and Vision options
- Free access to Ginger mental health, Gympass, Headspace, One Medical and Spring Health
Additional Considerations
- We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team and welcome applicants from all backgrounds and abilities.
- We're currently accepting applications from the states we have an established entity, which includes California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.
More About Propel
We believe that Americans with limited income deserve modern, respectful, and effective experiences around their government benefits and money. Unfortunately, the status quo often fails to treat them as first-class citizens in their daily interactions around the social safety net and financial services. The tech industry hasn’t pulled its weight in solving the problems faced by low-income Americans.
Propel’s mission is to change that. We’ve built Providers, the single most popular app in the country built specifically for low-income Americans. Over 5 million families each month use Providers to seamlessly manage their government benefits (programs like SNAP, commonly known as food stamps), conduct their banking, and save and earn money. Providers has been recognized by the White House, featured on the front page of the New York Times, and carries over 500,000 five-star reviews.
Propel is a for-profit, venture-backed company that holds its social mission at its core. We’re proud to be supported by a blend of nonprofits, impact investors, and world-class investors, including the Robin Hood Foundation, Andreessen Horowitz, Nyca Partners, Financial Health Network, JPMorgan Chase, Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, and Nas.
Join us, and let's build something amazing together!
