Engagement and Tips Coordinator, Temporary

New York City, United States

ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.

We will stop accepting applications for this role on Monday, March 31st at 12PM ET.

ProPublica’s unique, award-winning engagement reporting team fuels the newsroom’s signature crowdsourced investigations, using everything from callouts and tip lines to citizen-fueled science. Now, we’re looking for an engagement and tips coordinator who can help us triage, vet and distribute tips to journalists across our newsroom. This is a temporary, two-year role.

The coordinator will catalog and route information as it comes in so we can follow up quickly and securely. You’ll work alongside investigative reporters across the country to gather the evidence and receipts that power our journalism.

As the engagement coordinator, you will:

  • Help triage tips from different platforms and postal mail. You’ll be trained on secure communication tools.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for tipsters, ensuring a professional, sensitive and timely response to potentially confidential and time-sensitive information.
  • Route tips to beat reporters and editors, and communicate regularly with the engagement product manager.
  • Help organize our growing databases of sources to help inform future reporting on topics from education to health care and beyond.
  • Create summaries and analyses of trends coming into our tip lines for distribution to our editorial teams.
  • Connect with national, local and specialty reporting teams across ProPublica and in our many partner newsrooms, including through our Local Reporting Network, to share electronic and physical tips.

Our ideal candidate will have many of these skills:

  • At least three years’ experience working in a collaborative environment as a researcher or journalist. Experience working with enterprise, investigative or accountability journalism is a plus.
  • Strong news sense, keen attention to detail and the ability to connect the dots between reporters and their areas of interest.
  • Comfort working with distributed colleagues across the country.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and handle pressure while remaining calm and without sacrificing accuracy or attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to synthesize information for others.
  • A demonstrated ability to work with sensitive material in a secure and confidential manner. Experience working with end-to-end encrypted messaging technologies such as Signal or encrypted email.
  • Ability to work in the ProPublica NYC offices at least three days a week during standard business hours.
  • Ability to travel occasionally as required for team meetings or training.

We also know there are great candidates who can bring skills to ProPublica that we haven’t thought of and who won’t fit everything we’ve described above. If this is you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us what unique contributions you can offer.

This job is full time on a temporary, two-year basis, and it includes benefits. ProPublica is based in New York, and this role will require in office work on site at least three days a week. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

The expected salary range for this position is $80,000 to $85,000.
