Access Manager Pharmacy Technician: Texas License Req'd, VOB, PAs
The Pharmacy Access Manager supports Patient Services programs by strategically navigating the patient access process from prescription intake through treatment initiation. This role combines patient access and reimbursement expertise with a pharmacy technician background and to identify and address barriers related to coverage, authorization, prescription processing, pharmacy coordination, affordability, and fulfillment. This position must have an active Pharmacy Technician license in the employee’s home state.
The Pharmacy Access Manager serves as a central point of coordination among patients, healthcare providers and their office staff, payors, specialty pharmacy, dispensing and non-dispensing pharmacies, client stakeholders, and internal PRO-spectus teams. The role provides guidance and support throughout the access journey, helping ensure prescriptions and required documentation move efficiently through benefit verification, prior authorization, pharmacy processing, and treatment initiation.
Using pharmacy technician knowledge and experience, the Pharmacy Access Manager supports pharmacy-related case activities, identifies missing or incomplete prescription information, coordinates with pharmacy partners, and helps resolve prescription processing and fulfillment barriers. The role manages each case with a high level of accuracy, responsiveness, and completeness to support timely patient access to therapy.
Core Duties/Responsibilities:
- Manage end-to-end patient access case activities from prescription intake through treatment initiation, including benefit verification, prior authorization support, appeals coordination, affordability support, and pharmacy follow-up.
- Apply pharmacy technician knowledge to support prescription intake, pharmacy triage, prescription status review, and coordination of pharmacy-related case activities.
- Review prescription and patient information for completeness and identify missing, incomplete, or inconsistent information requiring follow-up with healthcare provider offices, pharmacies, patients, or other stakeholders.
- Coordinate with specialty, dispensing, and other pharmacy partners regarding prescription receipt, processing status, insurance requirements, patient outreach, affordability considerations, and fulfillment.
- Monitor prescription progression and proactively identify pharmacy, coverage, authorization, or operational barriers that may delay patient access to therapy.
- Manage insurance verification and authorization activities to establish coverage, identify applicable medical or pharmacy benefit requirements, and support appropriate access pathways.
- Support prior authorization and appeals processes by coordinating required information and documentation with healthcare provider offices, payors, pharmacies, and internal teams.
- Assist with coordination of copay assistance, patient assistance programs, foundation support, or other affordability resources, as applicable to the program.
- Serve as a primary point of contact between internal and external teams, including patients, providers, payors, pharmacies, facilities, client stakeholders, and other program partners.
- Provide education and guidance to provider offices regarding program processes, prescription requirements, coverage considerations, required documentation, and available patient support resources.
- Communicate case status, outstanding requirements, next steps, and barriers clearly and accurately to appropriate stakeholders.
- Effectively manage and prioritize competing demands, including insurance approval timelines, prescription processing requirements, patient treatment schedules, pharmacy timelines, and stakeholder communications.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete case documentation in accordance with program requirements, standard operating procedures, client expectations, and applicable privacy and compliance requirements.
- Identify complex reimbursement, pharmacy, fulfillment, or patient access issues and escalate appropriately while maintaining ownership of case progression.
- Collaborate closely with Field Reimbursement Managers and other Patient Services functions, as needed, to support continuity across the patient access journey.
- Provide support across multiple client programs, as assigned, ensuring consistent delivery of quality service and operational excellence.
Skills & Requirements:
- Strong knowledge of pharmacy workflows and prescription processing, including prescription intake, pharmacy triage, adjudication, and fulfillment processes.
- Demonstrated understanding of the role of specialty and dispensing pharmacies within the patient access journey.
- Proficient in navigating benefit verification, prior authorization, reimbursement, appeals, and patient affordability scenarios.
- Ability to understand and work across both pharmacy and medical benefit pathways, as applicable.
- Skilled in reviewing patient, prescription, insurance, and supporting documentation to identify information required for accurate case progression.
- Ability to identify prescription-processing barriers and coordinate effectively with provider offices, pharmacies, payors, and internal teams to facilitate resolution.
- Understanding of insurance coverage requirements, payor policies, prior authorization criteria, and reimbursement processes.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate and thorough case documentation.
- Ability to independently manage a caseload, prioritize work, and consistently meet established timelines and service expectations.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to coordinate multiple priorities, cases, stakeholders, and activities simultaneously.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify barriers, explore alternatives, and develop appropriate solutions while recognizing when escalation or collaboration is needed.

Education, Certifications and Experience:
- 2–4 years of experience in a pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, hospital, patient support, healthcare, reimbursement, insurance, or customer service–focused role, including 2+ years as a Pharmacy Technician
- Current and active Texas Pharmacy Technician licensure based on state requirements and prior work environment.
- NABP Certification through either Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (ExCPT) certification.
- Experience with prescription processing, pharmacy benefit coordination, specialty pharmacy operations, or pharmacy-based patient support strongly preferred.
- Experience with benefit verification, prior authorization, appeals, reimbursement support, copay assistance, or patient assistance programs preferred.
- Understanding of specialty pharmaceutical markets, reimbursement dynamics, and patient access challenges across diverse payor landscapes preferred.
- Experience working with healthcare providers, pharmacies, payors, patients, and/or pharmaceutical manufacturer programs preferred.
- College degree (bachelor’s or associate degree) preferred; relevant pharmacy technician and patient access experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
