Contract: Locum / Contract based
Location: Clinic-based work across Kilkenny or South Dublin
Start: ASAP (Flexible)
Employer: Specialist Neurodevelopmental Assessment Service

The role

We are recruiting experienced Clinical Psychologists or Educational Psychologist to support a high-volume, specialist ASD diagnostic service delivering comprehensive autism assessments for children and adolescents.

This is a locum, self‑employed opportunity, ideal for psychologists looking to undertake assessment-only work alongside other commitments or as a full time opportunity. Clinicians are paid per completed assessment, with administrative and pathway structures already in place to support efficient delivery.

Assessments are psychologist led, with Occupational Therapy or Speech & Language Therapy input contributing to overall formulation.

Payment structure

  • €1,400 per completed assessment (ADOS, ADI-R, WISC, Write-Up & Feedback)

Clinicians work as independent contractors and must hold their own professional indemnity insurance.

The ASD assessment pathway

Lead clinician: Psychologist
OT / SaLT role: Functional, sensory, and adaptive profile (non-diagnostic but integral to formulation)

Assessment components include:

  • Clinical intake and consent
  • ADI-R developmental history (virtual delivery acceptable)
  • ADOS-2 autism observation (face to face in clinic)
  • Cognitive assessment (WISC-V or WAIS)
  • OT / SaLT functional and sensory assessment
  • Diagnostic formulation
  • Feedback session and comprehensive written report

Diagnosis is made by the psychologist, who integrates all assessment data and provides feedback to families.

Time expectations (indicative)

Psychologist – client-facing time:

  • Intake & consent: 45–60 minutes
  • ADI-R (virtual): 90–150 minutes
  • ADOS-2 (face to face): 45–60 minutes
  • Cognitive assessment: 90–120 minutes
  • Feedback session: 45–60 minutes

Total client contact time: approximately 5–7 hours

Additional non-client-facing work:

  • Scoring of ADOS and cognitive assessments
  • Clinical formulation and MDT integration
  • Report writing

Estimated additional time: 6–10 hours, depending on case complexity

Total psychologist time per assessment: approximately 11–17 hours

Clinic expectations

  • ADOS-2 must be completed face to face
  • For full ASD assessments, psychologists typically complete around two per week, inclusive of assessment and initial write-up

Essential criteria

  • Doctorate or equivalent qualification in Clinical Psychology
  • PSI Chartership (or validation with department of health where qualifications were obtained outside Ireland)
  • Minimum 3 years post-qualification experience
  • Formal ADOS-2 training (essential)
  • ADI-R experience (formal training desirable but not essential for experienced clinicians)
  • Experience completing ASD diagnostic assessments independently

Desirable experience

  • Experience within a Children’s Disability Network Team (CDNT)
  • Previous work within neurodevelopmental or specialist ASD services

Why consider this role?

  • Competitive per-assessment remuneration
  • Flexible, piecework-style contracting
  • Assessment-only focus
  • Clearly defined diagnostic pathway
  • Clinical supervision and pathway support provided
