Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist 

Join an Expanding Gastroenterology Service

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our established Gastroenterology Department.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a collaborative and forward-thinking team committed to delivering high-quality gastrointestinal and hepatology services. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting both elective and acute gastroenterology services while contributing to the continued development of specialist gastrointestinal care.

We welcome applications from newly qualified consultants approaching CCT as well as experienced consultants seeking to further develop a subspecialty interest within a large, supportive department.

About the Role

The successful applicant will contribute to the delivery of comprehensive gastroenterology services across inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy settings.

Working within an experienced multidisciplinary team, you will help provide safe, timely and patient-centred care while supporting ongoing service development and quality improvement initiatives.

Main Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering consultant-led care for gastroenterology inpatients.
  • Providing outpatient gastroenterology clinics.
  • Undertaking diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy.
  • Participating in the consultant gastroenterology ward rota.
  • Supporting the delivery of inpatient gastroenterology referrals.
  • Participating in the consultant on-call rota for General Medicine, subject to departmental requirements.
  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to deliver high-quality gastroenterology and hepatology services.
  • Contributing to service development, clinical governance and quality improvement projects.
  • Supervising and supporting junior medical staff.
  • Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.

About the Department

The Gastroenterology Department provides comprehensive luminal gastroenterology and hepatology services, managing a wide range of benign and malignant gastrointestinal conditions.

Services include:

  • General Gastroenterology
  • Hepatology
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Gastrointestinal Cancer Services
  • Complex Gastrointestinal Disorders

The department works closely with dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialists, IBD teams, Nutrition Support Teams and specialist dietitians to provide coordinated multidisciplinary care.

Modern endoscopy facilities support a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including:

  • Gastroscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Large Polyp EMR
  • PEG insertion
  • Bowel Cancer Screening procedures
  • Dedicated inpatient endoscopy services

The department continues to invest in expanding specialist services and improving patient pathways.

Professional Development

This position provides an excellent opportunity for consultants wishing to broaden their experience within a large gastroenterology department.

Applicants working towards CESR/Portfolio Pathway are encouraged to apply. Subject to service requirements and individual progression, there may be opportunities to support continued development towards GMC Specialist Registration during the contract.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise by the commencement date.
  • European Specialty Examination in Gastroenterology & Hepatology (or equivalent).
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification.

Applicants should also hold GMC Specialist Registration in Gastroenterology, be within six months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview, or be progressing through the CESR/Portfolio Pathway with appropriate documentary evidence where applicable.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Higher medical or scientific degree relevant to Gastroenterology or Hepatology.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Broad experience in General Medicine.
  • Evidence of independent clinical practice.
  • Experience making complex clinical decisions and managing clinical risk.

Desirable

  • Previous NHS experience.
  • A specialist interest in Hepatology or another area that complements the existing consultant team.

Teaching and Training

Essential

  • Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate education.
  • Experience supervising Foundation Doctors and Specialty Trainees.
  • Ability to teach clinical knowledge and practical skills effectively.

Desirable

  • Formal teaching qualification.
  • Experience delivering undergraduate clinical teaching.
  • Experience teaching endoscopy.
  • Attendance at recognised educational or trainer development programmes.

Management, Audit and Research

Essential

  • Commitment to clinical governance and continuous service improvement.
  • Participation in audit and quality improvement activities.

Desirable

  • Evidence of academic or research achievements relevant to Gastroenterology.
  • Attendance at management or leadership programmes.
  • Publications or involvement in clinical research.
