Role and Responsibilities

Provides strategic leadership to the engineering organization for one or more products, guiding engineering managers, their teams, and staff engineers within their domain. Reporting to the VP of Engineering or CTO, this role collaborates closely with Product and Engineering leaders to translate strategic challenges into timely solutions. Responsible for the recruitment and retention of passionate technologists, fostering the growth of a world-class engineering team, and cultivating an engineering culture that maximizes customer value. 

Strategic Leadership & Vision

  • Collaborate with Engineering department leaders to define the strategic tone and direction for the engineering organization.
  • Develop and champion departmental strategies that align engineering efforts with overarching business objectives.
  • Partner with the product team and other key business stakeholders to assess, evaluate, and execute the product roadmap.
  • Contribute to the long-term product and technology strategy, including ideation and the development of forward-looking architectural designs.
  • Provide clear technology direction that drives measurable business improvements through a deep understanding of business needs and strategic trade-offs.
  • Continuously evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends to integrate an outside-in perspective into strategic planning.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of engineering managers and leaders.
  • Cultivate meaningful relationships to ensure optimal talent placement and individual growth within the organization.
  • Establish clear expectations through goal definition, provide candid and timely feedback, and foster a culture of accountability.
  • Partner with technical recruiting to evolve interviewing and onboarding processes, driving the strategic growth of engineering teams.
  • Oversee performance appraisals and guide career planning for direct reports.
  • Actively coach and mentor team members, supporting their professional development.

Technical Excellence & Culture

  • Continuously refine engineering processes and elevate the technical culture to optimize efficiency and innovation.
  • Champion cultural initiatives that positively impact the entire engineering department.
  • Model exemplary cross-functional collaboration between Engineering, Product, and other key departments.
  • Empower teams to build and ship high-quality software effectively, providing strategic technical guidance to maintain focus.
  • Contribute to the development of software, tooling, and designs that establish Pushpay's intellectual property.

Operational Excellence

  • Manage the complete lifecycle of key vendor and supplier relationships, encompassing technical evaluation, selection, performance management, and contract negotiation.
  • Act as the ultimate escalation point for major incidents within their domain, ensuring rapid resolution and leading blameless post-mortem processes to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget for engineering teams, including headcount, infrastructure costs, and tooling, while providing accurate financial projections.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to define the technical roadmap, championing initiatives to modernize the tech stack and strategically address technical debt.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Possesses applicable tertiary qualifications.
  • Demonstrates 10+ years of relevant experience developing internet-scale, multi-user software products.
  • Holds 3+ years of relevant engineering management experience, overseeing two or more engineering teams.
  • Exhibits a strong coding background with expertise in the architectural patterns of large, high-scale SaaS applications.
  • Proven track record of collaborating on product strategy and successfully delivering large-scale projects with multiple dependencies, utilizing modern practices such as Agile, Continuous Delivery, and Test-Driven Development.
  • Possesses experience in shaping cultural initiatives that positively impact a department, coupled with a strong desire to cultivate an engineering culture focused on maximizing customer value.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, dedicated, and organized within a fast-paced, iterative development environment.
  • Exhibits strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire engineers while effectively communicating the company vision to potential candidates.
