Director of Compliance & Payment Operations

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON
Qualia is building payment solutions to simplify how money moves in real estate closings. You'll own Compliance and Payment Operations for this program—building the infrastructure, managing vendor & partner relationships, and running a tight operation that minimizes risk while enabling product growth.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Own Banking & Payments Compliance
- Build and maintain Qualia’s banking & payments compliance management infrastructure—governance, policies, procedures, training, and monitoring
- Own partner and vendor relationships—oversight cadence, reporting, examination support, issue resolution, and escalation management
- Ensure ongoing compliance with applicable payment regulations (NACHA, Reg E, Reg CC, BSA/AML) and evolve controls as requirements change
- Oversee the risk framework for ACH returns, fraud prevention, transaction monitoring, and third-party risk management
Run Excellent Operations & Manage Risk
- Build and lead a payment operations function focused on exception handling, returns management, and issue resolution
- Establish clear escalation paths and SLAs for payment issues—ensure problems are identified early, triaged quickly, and resolved cleanly
- Monitor transaction quality and fraud signals; work cross-functionally to address root causes and reduce operational risk
- Drive continuous improvement in operational metrics—return rates, resolution times, and customer impact
Enable Growth
- Hire, coach, and lead a lean compliance and payments operations team
- Partner with Product and Engineering to embed compliance into new features without slowing velocity
- Guide business teams on launching payment solutions with clear guardrails
YOUR BACKGROUND THAT LIKELY MAKES YOU A MATCH
Required
- 10+ years in fintech or payments, with 5+ years in compliance or operations leadership
- Experience managing banking partner relationships and regulatory oversight
- Deep knowledge of ACH and wire payment rails, including NACHA Operating Rules and return risk management
- Track record building compliance programs and payment operations in high-growth environments
Preferred
- Vertical SaaS payments, real estate, or proptech experience
- CAMS, CRCM, or similar certifications
- JD nice to have

This role has a base annual salary of $180,000-$210,000 plus a competitive equity and benefits package. (Salary to be determined by relevant experience, location, knowledge, and skills of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
While this role is based in San Francisco, California, we're open to exploring remote possibilities for qualified candidates.
