Systems Architect
Boston, MA USA
Role Overview
QuEra is seeking a System Architect of Quantum Control System to lead the design, integration, and evolution of the control stack for our neutral atom quantum computers. This role combines expertise in embedded systems, real-time control, to ensure reliable, synchronized, and scalable quantum operations across complex hardware and software components. You will work closely with physicists, engineers, and software developers to architect systems that bridge experimental requirements and high-performance execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and own the end-to-end design of the quantum control system, including embedded devices, real-time coordination, networking, and hardware/software integration.
- Define system interfaces between distributed control components (e.g., FPGAs, DACs, timing modules, AOD drivers).
- Translate quantum physics requirements—such as pulse timing, gate execution, and real-time feedback—into hardware and software specifications.
- Lead integration of embedded systems with synchronization protocols (e.g., PTP, GPSDO, White Rabbit) to ensure precise timing across the control stack.
- Guide the design of scalable architectures that support modular expansion, system health monitoring, and fault tolerance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align system-level decisions with calibration workflows, compilers, and experimental software.
- Evaluate and recommend hardware platforms, embedded networking stacks, and low-latency communication solutions.
- Mentor engineering teams working on firmware, device control software, and orchestration systems.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field (PhD a plus).
- 15+ years of experience designing real-time embedded systems, control systems, or networked instrumentation platforms.
- Demonstrated expertise in embedded networking systems, including experience with deterministic systems, time-sensitive networking (TSN), or control over Ethernet.
- Strong understanding of FPGA systems, microcontrollers, DAC/ADC integration, and hardware/software co-design.
- Experience architecting distributed control systems with strict timing and synchronization requirements.
- Proficiency in defining system interfaces and hardware abstraction layers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience implementing embedded protocols (e.g., SPI, I2C, UDP, TCP, gRPC over Ethernet) in low-latency systems.
- Exposure to optical or photonic control systems, signal processing, or high-bandwidth data acquisition.
- Familiarity with quantum computing systems, atomic physics experiments, or high-performance lab instrumentation.
- Working knowledge of Python, C/C++, HDL (Verilog/VHDL), and modern software development tools.
- Experience with configuration management, diagnostics, and system monitoring in
