VP of Research - AI, NLP & Writing Technologies
As the VP of Research, you will lead teams of AI Researchers, Engineers, and Linguists to develop advanced natural language technologies for multilingual writing and communication products. Your scope will span both the applied AI/ML teams building state-of-the-art NLP solutions and the linguistics experts who ensure our tools are grounded in deep language insight.
In this role, you won’t just be building better models to hand off to Product & Engineering. This role represents a unique opportunity to shape the vision of the core product experience of the organization: personalized multilingual writing assistance technology.
You will drive innovation across core areas like paraphrasing, grammar checking, summarization, and translation—while also shaping the long-term vision for language technologies that power world-class writing and communication tools. You’ll mentor technical leaders, champion a culture of research excellence and product impact, and partner closely with product, design, and executive leadership to turn groundbreaking ideas into widely-used, meaningful tools.
Responsibilities
- Lead a cross-functional research organization that includes both AI and linguistics teams to build state-of-the-art solutions in language technologies.
- Promote interdisciplinary excellence by integrating linguistic expertise into AI model development, ensuring that solutions are not only technically strong but linguistically informed.
- Devise and deliver novel solutions that improve users’ lives, drive the business forward, and transform the broader landscape of multilingual language products.
- Invent novel methods that produce transformative outcomes, i.e., that cause a significant change in how users engage with the product or brand, how the team executes, or how the organization functions.
- Create and maintain a culture of uncompromising pursuit of quality in AI solutions.
- Identify gaps in team knowledge/practices and provide new processes and ideas to help AI and Linguistics managers solve novel research problems with greater impact and efficiency.
- Collaborate with AI, Linguistics, Product, and organization leadership to form and flesh out the roadmap. Own the Research team’s goals and roadmap on a quarterly and annual basis.
- Shape multilingual language products through impactful decision making about the design and construction of natural language technologies.
- Mentor team members to increase management skills, product knowledge, and technical domain expertise.
Ideal Candidate
- PhD in computer science, natural language processing, computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Record of publications at top venues in artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and machine learning on par with that of a tenured professor at an R1 university, or equivalent evidence of transformative impact on relevant fields.
- 8+ years of experience as a people manager of teams developing natural language processing technology.
- Extensive experience leading the design, implementation, and optimization of solutions for natural language applications.
- Passion for and deep understanding of writing, reading, and research.
- Strong command of the English language.
- Preferred: expertise in one or more of the following languages: German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese.

The base pay for this position is dependent on multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed. You may also be eligible to participate in our bonus program and may be offered benefits, and other types of compensation.

$251,000 - $452,000 USD
In accordance with Colorado law, the base salary for this role if filled within Colorado is as follows.

$251,000 - $384,000 USD
In accordance with New York law, the base salary for this role if filled within New York is as follows.
New York Pay Range
$251,000 - $429,000 USD

$251,000 - $407,000 USD
