Head of People Operations

Our mission is to accelerate the energy transition. 20% of US global warming emissions come from homes (that's more than cars!). The largest driver of home emissions is burning fossil fuels for heat. To accomplish the transition, over 80M US homes need to transition from combustion to efficient, electric heat pumps over the coming decades.

We believe for this to happen the world needs fantastic products that are easy and desirable to purchase. Today's heat pumps lack great design, make limited use of software, and are difficult and stressful to adopt. We are building a next generation, beautifully designed, AI optimized home heating and cooling system that is 10x better than what is on the market today. And we are making it easy to purchase and adopt by managing all sales, rebates, permitting and installation for our customers.

Role

Quilt is just over 2 years old. We have passed 50 full time employees and there is a lot more growth ahead of us. Up until now, recruiting, culture, and people leadership has been driven entirely by Quilt's founders. We – the founders – care a lot about our culture and employee experience. But Quilt is now at the scale where having us be the bottleneck in people operations will start degrading, rather than adding, to the outcomes we want.

People are growing and succeeding here; we need to develop the right systems to reward and incentivize them. People are stepping into new roles and opportunities; we need the right training and coaching to set them up for success. We are hiring quickly but hiring managers are each running their own bespoke hiring processes; we need to standardize our best practices for both operational excellence and equity.

This role is to establish the People Operations function at Quilt – to drive the strategy and execution, identify the largest opportunities for impact, and achieve great outcomes. It is a hands-on role well suited for someone excited to create something from the ground-up. Our aspiration is for Quilt to be an incredible workplace, a place of excellence, and one of the very best run companies in the world. This role will be a critical player in us achieving (and sustaining) these aspirations.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic leadership and implementation of Quilt’s processes and operations to support the full employee lifecycle: Recruiting, onboarding, growth and engagement, to alumni.
  • Developing talent acquisition strategy across the company, including directly managing both in-house and external recruitment.
  • Employee onboarding, learning and development.
  • Growth and development including performance management, leveling, job ladders, promotion, and feedback processes.
  • Compensation, incentive alignment, and total rewards.
  • Offboarding and employee issues as they arise.
  • Help to strengthen, communicate, and evolve the Quilt culture. Weave Quilt culture through decision making and how we hire, reward, and communicate.
  • Driving success metrics including: time to fill open roles, candidate close rates, employee satisfaction, retention, and development.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience in people, HR, recruiting or related functions with at least 5 years of team development and management experience. Prior experience in a Head of People / People Operations or Chief People Officer role preferred.
  • Clear strength in one dimension of the role with real breadth covering the full range of responsibilities.
  • A builder's mentality with a focus on execution and delivery.
  • Highly empathetic with excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Thrives in a culture that values direct feedback with kindness.
  • Mission driven with a passion to be part of a company motivated by the opportunity to impact climate change through electrification and design.
  • Excited by the opportunity to be the first People leader at a fast growing, ambitious Series A startup, to help us grow from 50 to 500 people and beyond.

This is a full time, onsite role in our Redwood City office.

The expected base salary range for this role is $195,000 - $215,000/year depending on experience.  In addition to base salary, Quilt also offers meaningful equity and top-tier benefits.

This is an opportunity to join a highly skilled and ambitious team of people who truly care about the impact of their work. We are on a mission to accelerate a species-level human transition. For over a million years we've been burning things to stay warm. It's time to move to a better way of living.
