Software Engineer in Test, Device Software

HQ - Redwood City, CA

Software Engineer in Test, Device Software

Location: Redwood City, CA — hybrid, at least three days per week in the office
Employment:Full-time

The role

Quilt's mission is to move homes away from fossil fuel heating. We build heat pumps and software that make efficient electric heating and cooling a better experience for homeowners.

We're looking for a software engineer who can build dependable test infrastructure and contribute to the device software it validates. Your work will help us ship reliable software for products people depend on in their homes.

Your initial focus will be making device-software testing repeatable and useful: building automation in Python, connecting tests to real hardware, and giving engineers clear feedback on their changes. You'll own the testing workflow and work with firmware, systems, cloud, and mobile engineers to choose meaningful coverage, investigate failures, and improve testability. As AI accelerates development, these systems will help the team validate changes quickly and confidently.

You'll bring practical C++ skills to this work, making changes to device software that improve its reliability and make it easier to test. As automation reduces manual effort, there will be room to take on broader device-software contributions. This is a hands-on role combining software development, infrastructure, and work with physical devices.

What you'll do

  • Build and maintain automated tests, reusable tools, and infrastructure for connected devices.
  • Make hardware testing repeatable and integrate it into development and CI workflows.
  • Design coverage for important customer experiences and failure scenarios, using simulation, integration tests, and real devices where each is most useful.
  • Investigate failures across software, hardware, and connectivity, working with other engineers to implement fixes and regression tests.
  • Improve test reliability, reduce manual effort, and turn results into a clear picture of release readiness.
  • Develop and test C++ changes that improve device-software reliability and testability, with room for broader product contributions as automation matures.

What you bring

  • Strong software engineering skills and experience building maintainable automation or comparable systems.
  • Experience writing and debugging Python and C++, with the ability to apply those skills in unfamiliar codebases.
  • Experience making automated tests and CI workflows reliable and useful to other engineers.
  • Sound judgment about system-level testing: what to test, how to test it, and how to interpret the results and their limits.
  • Strong debugging skills in Linux environments, including processes, networking, and logs.
  • Comfort working with physical devices and investigating problems across hardware and software.
  • The ability to drive work independently, coordinate with others, and communicate findings clearly.

Relevant experience can come from software engineering, infrastructure, robotics, embedded systems, or test engineering. We don't require a particular degree or a fixed number of years of experience.

Experience that would help

  • Building hardware-in-the-loop systems, automated device labs, or device simulators.
  • Embedded software development or testing connected-device provisioning, updates, and recovery.
  • Familiarity with test frameworks and build tools such as pytest, gtest, or Bazel.
