THE ROLE

Manager, Air Freight Operations

We are seeking a Manager, Air Freight Operations to join our growing team. The Manager, Air Freight Operations is responsible for the execution, vendor management, and performance oversight of the company’s North American air freight network. This role ensures on-time pickup from fulfillment centers, flight performance to SLA, and on-time injection into destination markets to support last mile cutoff commitments.

Responsibilities

Air Freight Vendor Management

  • Own day-to-day relationship with domestic air freight providers.
  • Lead weekly performance reviews covering:
    • On-time pickup from FCs
    • Flight departure and arrival performance to SLA
    • Missed uplift and bump frequency
    • Recovery execution and timeliness
    • On-time injection into last mile carriers
  • Enforce SLAs, penalties, and structured corrective action plans.

On-Time Pickup & Injection Performance

  • Ensure all scheduled FC linehaul moves depart on time to meet airport tender windows.
  • Monitor flight performance daily to ensure arrival supports last mile injection cutoffs.
  • Drive accountability for recovery plans when flights are delayed, bumped, or canceled.
  • Minimize injection misses caused by air delays or recovery breakdowns.
  • Establish clear escalation paths for same-day operational risks.

Risk Mitigation & Flight Optimization

  • Analyze historical performance to identify recurring delay or bump risks.
  • Recommend alternative flight options, departure times, or routings to improve SLA adherence.
  • Evaluate tradeoffs between cost, speed, and reliability.
  • Develop contingency playbooks for:
    • Missed uplift
    • Weather disruptions
    • Airport congestion
    • Capacity shortages
  • Partner with forwarders to pre-book critical capacity during peak periods.

FC & Documentation Readiness

  • Ensure operational compliance at FCs to support air movement, including:
    • Accurate carton labeling
    • AWB documentation
    • IAC compliance
    • Proper sort code segregation
  • Partner with FC Operations to correct upstream errors that jeopardize tender acceptance or flight uplift.
  • Reduce tender rejections and documentation-related delays.

 

Financial & Performance Management

 

  • Own domestic air freight cost per pound / per package performance.
  • Monitor accessorial charges, recovery costs, and premium uplift spend.
  • Identify cost savings opportunities without degrading SLA performance.
  • Support budget forecasting and peak season financial planning.

Cross-Functional Alignment

  • Partner with Last Mile Operations to align injection cutoff expectations.
  • Coordinate with Network Visibility to ensure flight and recovery tracking accuracy.
  • Collaborate with FC Operations to protect pickup SLAs.
  • Provide performance reporting to Transportation leadership with clear risk visibility.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5-7 years in domestic transportation, air freight, or parcel logistics.
  • 2+ years managing freight forwarders or air freight vendors.
  • Strong understanding of commercial passenger air cargo operations.
  • Experience managing time-sensitive ecommerce freight.
  • Proven ability to drive vendor accountability and SLA performance.
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to evaluate speed vs. cost tradeoffs.
  • Willingness to travel to key origin and destination airports.

All posted ranges are reflective of base salary and may vary depending upon experience level and location. Bonus and equity may also be provided for eligible roles.

Pay Range

$121,000 - $158,000 USD
