Location: Remote with occasional on-site work at IRS locations (Lanham, MD)

About this role:

As a Senior DevSecOps Engineer, you will be a key member of the team supporting critical IRS infrastructure under the Linux Migration Initiative. You will contribute to the automation, configuration, and deployment of systems in a secure, scalable, and efficient manner. This role requires significant experience in a DevSecOps environment, leveraging tools like Terraform, GitLab, and OpenShift to ensure that infrastructure services meet federal requirements. This position involves working closely with the Server Support and Services Division (SSSD) at the IRS to develop code scripts, infrastructure as code (IaC), and manage Linux-based platforms.

In this role, you will work on modernizing IRS systems while ensuring compliance with federal security standards. You’ll be responsible for driving infrastructure automation, containerization, and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines to support federal operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development, integration, and management of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for federal environments, ensuring compliance with IRS standards.
  • Write and maintain code scripts and playbooks for automating system configurations and deployments.
  • Utilize Terraform CLI, GitLab CI, and Jenkins to manage infrastructure automation and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Administer and develop OpenShift Container Platform and containerized applications using Docker and Podman.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, federal stakeholders, and technical SMEs to ensure project milestones are met and delivered on time.
  • Ensure compliance with federal regulations such as NIST, CMMC, and IRS-specific security requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentor junior team members in DevSecOps best practices.
  • Perform troubleshooting and issue resolution across environments, ensuring stability and availability of key federal systems.
  • Contribute to the development of secure, scalable infrastructure solutions to support the IRS’ Linux Migration Initiative.
Required Skills / Education / Certifications & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in a DevSecOps environment, including experience with:
  • Expertise in OpenShift Container Platform administration and development.
  • Proficiency in Docker or Podman for containerization.
  • PostgreSQL and Redis experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with AWS and Ansible is desired but not required.
  • Strong scripting skills in languages such as Bash, Python, or Shell.
Desired Skills:
  • Experience working with cloud technologies like AWS GovCloud or Azure Government.
  • Familiarity with federal cybersecurity frameworks, including NIST 800-53 and FedRAMP.
  • Experience leading technical teams on federal projects and managing complex technical implementations.
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes and Ansible in a secure environment is a plus.
  • Ability to manage and maintain complex Red Hat or Linux-based environments in a federal setting.

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex messaging issues in a secure, mission-critical environment.
  • Collaboration: Exceptional teamwork skills, especially when working across various departments and external teams to ensure system stability and compliance.
  • Leadership: Ability to lead MQ infrastructure projects and mentor junior staff in MQ administration best practices.
