Head of Software Engineering - AI Applications

Greater Boston, MA; Los Angeles, CA; Seattle, WA

The Opportunity

Join the team who is building an AI-powered platform to transform the $2T engineering services industry. We’re creating an intelligent operating system for engineering firms and their customers, using agentic AI to supercharge their talents and build products in hard technology spaces.

This is a ground-floor opportunity for an entrepreneurial engineering leader. You’ll create the technical foundations for a high-potential software product with the support of a parent company that is leading innovation in engineering and manufacturing.

Who We’re Looking For

You’re a builder and leader who measures success by customer impact and has developed prototype products and taken them to scale. You’ve deployed on modern frameworks and can develop software that pushes the frontier. You’re energized by solving hard customer problems, finding new ways to work, and shipping products which make people’s jobs meaningfully better.

You’ll lead our software engineering efforts and work closely with our general manager, head of product, and AI engineers. You’ll own the systems and software we deploy and build our engineering team from 1 to 8+ engineers over the next 18 months.

What You’ll Do

First 90 Days:

  • Learn the Re:Build business and establish an understanding of our companies, their customers, and how they collaborate
  • Sharpen our team development practices and the technology stacks we’ll use to scale from 10 to 100,000 users
  • Develop first prototypes of our AI-powered agents and validate them with product and pilot customers

First Year:

  • Own the entire software stack from infrastructure to user experience
  • Productionize models and agent workflows with our AI engineering team
  • Hire and grow a small but mighty team with software, devops, and mlops expertise
  • Develop software that helps us realize product-market fit and win our first 10 paying customers
  • Build systems that balance speed of iteration with long-term scalability

Core Responsibilities:

  • Architect and implement cloud-native applications using modern frameworks
  • Create robust APIs and services that power both web applications and AI agents
  • Build data pipelines and infrastructure to support AI/ML workflows
  • Establish engineering practices that allow our teams to move fast with minimal breakage and accrued technical debt
  • Collaborate with customers during regular feedback sessions to refine the product
  • Present technical strategy and progress in monthly leadership reviews

Technical Requirements

Must Have:

  • 5+ years building software products from concept to scale (10K+ users)
  • Deep expertise in full-stack web development and API design
  • Experience with cloud platforms and containerized deployments
  • Track record of leading engineering teams (3+ engineers) and technical hiring
  • Strong opinions about system design, loosely held
  • Ability to balance rapid iteration with maintainable, well-tested code

Valuable Experience:

  • Building SaaS platforms from scratch at startups or innovation labs
  • Working with LLM APIs, vector databases, and coding agents
  • Implementing real-time collaboration features and workflow automation
  • Experience in engineering, manufacturing, or B2B software markets
  • Track record of technical leadership and mentoring

Technology Stacks

You’ll have significant input on choosing our tools, frameworks, and development languages as we scale. We value pragmatic technology decisions that balance speed of development with long-term maintainability. We use GitHub, Linear, and modern AI coding assistants to increase velocity.

What We Offer

  • Real Impact: Build something that fundamentally changes how hard technology engineering gets done
  • Equity & Growth: Participation in Re:Build’s LTIP equity program and opportunity for founder equity and leadership role in potential spin-out
  • Customer Access: Direct access to hundreds of real engineering projects annually through Re:Build companies
  • Resources: Budget for tools, conferences, and team development
  • Autonomy: Backed by Re:Build but operating with startup independence
  • Learning: Work directly with customers and AI engineers leading the way
  • Benefits: Full health/dental/vision, bonus program, generous 401K, paid time off, annual learning stipend

Engineering Culture

  • Quality First: Human or AI-generated code must be well-tested and maintainable
  • Customer-Focused: Regular customer feedback sessions directly inform our roadmap
  • Pragmatic Innovation: We adopt new technologies when they solve real problems
  • Team Growth: You’ll mentor engineers and have significant ownership over hiring
  • Transparent Communication: Regular team interactions, monthly leadership reviews, open decision-making

What Success Looks Like

  • Month 3: First agentic AI feature in pilot testing gaining customer feedback
  • Month 6: Multiple pilot customers using several agents on the platform regularly
  • Month 12: Clear product-market fit signals and platform earning revenue from first engineering services projects

Compensation & Location

Location: Remote-first, with preference for candidates in Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, or other cities with Re:Build offices.

Compensation: Competitive salary range of $185,000 to $240,000 with performance bonus and long-term incentive plan included. Potential equity stake under independent spinout scenario, with accelerated vesting for foundational contributions.

Please note this role is restricted to US citizens or lawful permanent residents only due to exposure to export controlled information

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
