Senior Mechanical Designer
About Re:Build
At Re:Build, our mission is to ensure the next generation of important products are made, at scale, in America. We are laying the foundation for a better future for our customers, employees, and communities by revitalizing America's manufacturing base and creating meaningful jobs across the country, including in historically deindustrialized regions.
We operate an advanced, end-to-end manufacturing platform that partners with industrial companies and innovators to take products from first concept to full-scale production in critical verticals including aerospace and defense, electrification, medical, energy and environment, and robotics and automation.
The way we operate is as important as the work we do. It's guided by The Re:Build Way, 16 principles that shape how we collaborate with each other, partner with our customers and vendors, and contribute to the communities where we operate. (link to The Re:Build Way principles)

Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer who enjoys solving complex design challenges and turning ideas into practical, buildable equipment. You take skid-based, modular and containerized systems from concept through detailed 2D and 3D design and release for fabrication, working mostly in SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
Whether your experience comes from custom machinery, industrial equipment, automation, manufacturing or process systems, you develop design solutions that balance function, manufacturability, safety, cost and schedule.
You are comfortable working directly with clients. You communicate clearly, ask the right questions, and turn their input into clear, documented project requirements the team can build from.
You take ownership of technical work, collaborate closely with engineers and fabrication teams, and share your knowledge with less experienced designers. This is a chance to lead challenging design projects and help shape our design standards while staying hands-on.
This position is based onsite in Rochester and/or Rush, NY, with occasional travel to customer and supplier locations, typically less than 25%.
What You Get To Do
- Lead mechanical design of custom equipment, skid-mounted and modular systems, and industrial machinery from concept through release for fabrication.
- Develop 3D models and 2D drawings including layouts, assemblies, weldments and components in SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Produce general arrangement drawings, equipment layouts, fabrication and assembly drawings, and bills of material using GD&T, weld symbols and drafting standards.
- Solve complex mechanical design challenges while considering performance, safety, manufacturability, and cost.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, and manufacturing teams to develop integrated equipment and system designs.
- Lead technical design reviews, evaluate design solutions, and provide guidance to project teams and customers.
- Partner with fabrication and assembly teams to resolve technical challenges and support successful equipment builds and installations.
- Support project planning, technical proposals, and engineering estimates.
- Mentor junior designers and drafters, providing technical guidance and reviewing design work.
- Improve design standards, tools, and processes to enhance quality, consistency, and efficiency.
What You Bring To The Team
Required
- 7+ years of mechanical design or equipment design experience in an industrial, manufacturing or engineering-services environment.
- Advanced proficiency in 3D and 2D modelling software including SolidWorks and working AutoCAD, or similar tools.
- Experience designing equipment, frames, weldments or assemblies that were fabricated and built from your drawings.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, dimensioning, tolerances, fabrication methods and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to independently manage complex design assignments from concept through detailed design and release.
- Experience reviewing technical drawings, solving design challenges, and collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide technical guidance to other designers.
- An associate degree, bachelor's degree, technical certification or equivalent experience in Mechanical Design, Drafting, Engineering Technology or a related field.
- Commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement.
- Ability to work onsite in Rochester and/or Rush, NY, with travel up to 25%.
Preferred
- Experience designing custom machinery, industrial automation equipment, skid-mounted systems, or modular process equipment.
- Experience with AutoCAD Plant 3D or other plant design software.
- Knowledge of piping layouts, pressure vessels or industrial process systems.
- Familiarity with engineering analysis and simulation tools such as SolidWorks FEA, ANSYS, or Caesar II.
- Experience developing technical estimates, supporting proposals, or participating in customer design reviews.
- Experience mentoring junior designers or leading technical design activities.
- Familiarity with 3D point clouds, ISO 9001, Lean manufacturing, or continuous improvement practices.
- Knowledge of industrial safety standards and equipment design requirements.
