The Impact You’ll Make

You will drive key partnerships and transactions that advance Recursion’s mission to decode biology to radically improve lives. These partnerships and ongoing support of key alliances will ensure Recursion continues to set the bar in significant collaborations within the Techbio industry. 

In this role, you will:

  • Help to craft win-win partnerships that accelerate Recursion’s mission, driving the company forward and setting new industry standards
  • Partner with the Business Development team to align to business priorities while protecting the company’s interests
  • Lead the execution of term sheets and definitive agreements across research collaborations, technology licensing, asset licensing, and other complex transactions; conducting diligence, reviewing, interpreting, and negotiating terms, in strategic alignment with the Business Development leadership and broader Company goals
  • Support pre-existing collaborations in concert with alliance management through ongoing contract interpretation; drafting amendments as needed; advising on contract compliance, including those provisions relating to data licenses and governance among partnerships
  • Facilitate internal contract approval and stakeholder negotiation to resolve complex issues and assist in disputes (escalating complex legal and factual issues to the appropriate internal parties, educating stakeholders on contract term implications). Communicate with business units to ensure all obligations are being met (e.g., milestones, deliverables, invoicing etc.).
  • Work with Intellectual Property to support its strategic IP filing strategy, prosecution and maintenance as it pertains to business development
  • Serve as a subject matter authority on business development and alliance management matters within the Law Department and collaborate with other legal functions as needed (e.g., Corporate Governance, Intellectual Property, Compliance, Data Privacy and Governance, Litigation and Products/Regulatory Law group)

The Team You’ll Join 

You will join a high-functioning team of expert lawyers, each working to advance the mission of Recursion. While the legal team members each have defined areas of expertise and support, they regularly connect to support each other in work and communication as well as professional development. Your role specifically will partner collaboratively with the Business Development team, which includes Alliance Management.  Both groups operate at a fast-pace with open lines of communication and transparent strategic imperatives.

The Experience You’ll Need

  • Significant experience supporting a broad corporate practice including licensing, contracting, and other relevant transactional experience in the US life sciences sector at a reputable law firm and, preferably, also within an in-house legal environment
  • Juris Doctor with active bar membership 
  • In-house experience at a large pharmaceutical or public biotech company is a plus
  • Experience, or demonstrated interest, in the application of technology or AI in life sciences a plus
  • A member in good standing of at least one state bar with the ability to practice law in Utah as in-house counsel  
  • Substantial experience and demonstrated technical excellence in general corporate matters, issue spotting and resolution, analytical thinking, and steering cross-functional groups to consensus, including through unique, urgent situations where little precedent or guidance exists
  • The ability to provide timely, well-informed, practical risk-based advice that facilitates business decision-making in alignment with strategic objectives
  • Attention to detail, with excellent communication, analytical, and project management abilities
  • Accountable, dependable, and self-motivated for continuous improvement of company templates, policies, and processes
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, early-stage company environment, with the ability to work independently and apply good business and legal judgment in assessing compliance issues
  • Aptitude for maintaining strong working cross-functional relationships
  • Practical, creative, and proactive problem-solving skills

Working Location:

This position is based at our office located in Salt Lake City or New York preferably. Please note that we are a hybrid environment and ask that employees spend 50% of their time per week in office.

At Recursion, we believe that every employee should be compensated fairly. Based on the skill and level of experience required for this role, the estimated current annual base range for this role is:

  • Developing: $248,000
  • Skilled: $275,000 
  • Expert: $303,000

You will also be eligible for bonuses and equity compensation + our comprehensive benefits package for United States based candidates. The range displayed on each job posting reflects target ranges for US new hire salaries and is determined by job, level, and market factors.
