Data Scientist, Neuroscience Drug Discovery
Your work will change lives. Including your own.
The Impact You’ll Make
As part of Recursion’s neuroscience computational biology team, you will be at the forefront of reimagining neuroscience drug discovery using Recursion’s massive data capabilities. As Recursion continues to grow our work in neuroscience, together with our external partners, you will have the opportunity to help chart that path. Working alongside world-class biologists, medicinal chemists, engineers, data scientists and ML scientists, you'll analyze and interpret results, combine multiple datasets to drive insights, train ML models and industrialize approaches to inform key program decisions, with the ultimate goal of bringing life-changing therapeutics to patients living with neurological or neurodegenerative disease.
In this role, you will:
- Synthesize diverse datasets (internal and external) to generate and evaluate hypotheses for drug discovery, biomarker development, and mechanism of action
- Interpret and discuss data and analysis results with project leadership in a clear and compelling way that drives toward getting medicines to patients
- Design analyses and experiment cascades to collect and combine diverse data that inform statistically-sound decisions weighing risks and benefits
- Train Machine Learning models for in silico experiments to create virtuous cycles in order to validate and prioritise decisions and insights in the partnership
- Industrialize approaches and analyses to not only solve for the current project, but also to accelerate future projects and scale the impact that we can have
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Recursion’s data science and ML teams to further advance Recursion’s ability to interpret and translate large-scale phenomics data into therapeutic programs
The Team You’ll Join
Reporting to the Principal Data Scientist, you will join a group of data scientists and computational biologists that collaborate with an interdisciplinary collective of biological, computational, drug discovery, and data/machine learning scientists. Our team focus is to leverage our unique combined skillset of scientific and domain expertise together with data analysis and insight generation to drive data-driven decisions in the partnership. To achieve this, we work with many different types of data, understand deeply how they are generated, and design the best analyses to answer key questions in the partnership. These analyses range from data visualizations to ML models to rank and prioritize targets, compounds or programs, hence we aim for code replicability and standardization to scale our approach.
The Experience You’ll Need
- PhD in a relevant field (statistics, mathematics, computer science, machine learning, etc.) and 2+ years of experience or MS in a relevant field and 3+ years of experience.
- Ability to build, test and deploy predictive data models.
- Exceptional data visualization skills through creation of plots, documentation and presentations and ability to clearly explain computational analyses and methodologies to cross-functional and non-technical teams.
- Fluency and experience working with Python and following best software development practices.
- Extensive experience in building and deploying analytical pipelines leveraging tools like Kedro, Prefect or Airflow
- Experience in biology and/or drug discovery and ideally applying computational methods to analyze complex biological (images, proteomics, transcriptomics, GWAS, genomics, etc.) and/or human clinical data.

The Values That We Hope You Share:
- We Care: We care about our drug candidates, our Recursionauts, their families, each other, our communities, the patients we aim to serve and their loved ones. We also care about our work.
- We Learn: Learning from the diverse perspectives of our fellow Recursionauts, and from failure, is an essential part of how we make progress.
- We Deliver: We are unapologetic that our expectations for delivery are extraordinarily high. There is urgency to our existence: we sprint at maximum engagement, making time and space to recover.
- Act Boldly with Integrity: No company changes the world or reinvents an industry without being bold. It must be balanced; not by timidity, but by doing the right thing even when no one is looking.
- We are One Recursion: We operate with a 'company first, team second' mentality. Our success comes from working as one interdisciplinary team.
Recursion spends time and energy connecting every aspect of work to these values. They aren’t static, but regularly discussed and questioned because we make decisions rooted in those values in our day-to-day work. You can read more about our values and how we live them every day here.
