We’re evolving streaming beyond the Apache Kafka® protocol into a unified “engine of record” that delivers a categorical reduction in complexity, wicked-fast performance, onboard Wasm transforms, and transparent tiered storage that gives consumers access to both real-time and historical data from a single API.

In this role, you'll work closely with cross-functional teams to design and engineer solutions that make advanced technology feel seamless and human. The Design Engineer role will partner alongside other principal engineers to focus on end-to-end user experience across Redpanda’s product suite. The expectation is to own an entire user experience flow, including delivering of the UX code, as well as influence product direction end-to-end for the product you co-own. Think of this as a partnership for building end-user experience for a developer centric audience - you are the audience :) 

The role will also partner with key strategic stakeholders of the company, including the CEO, Product and Engineering leaders to bring them along and solicit feedback as thought partners for affecting company-wide product directions for developer-led growth products.

You Will:

  • Gather product requirements and lead the design process from ideation to polished user experiences
  • Collaborate closely with designers, frontend engineers, and product managers to create high-quality product implementations
  • Evolve the internal design system, ensuring consistency and enabling peers to contribute efficiently, leveraging your existing knowledge and new tools to develop improved processes for development
  • Mentor and support peer engineers fostering quality and continuous improvement
  • Lead technical implementations and product efforts involving multiple engineers
  • Work on products that are used by thousands of customers and users on a daily basis

You Have:

  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in design engineering, frontend development, or a related field
  • Strong programming and frontend engineering skills, including deep knowledge of modern web technologies (React, Typescript, NextJS)
  • Experience with AI productivity tool likes Figma’s MCP for generating code from design mocks Comment end 
  • Great design skills and the ability to implement ideas and work alongside other principal backend engineers to deliver an end-to-end experience
  • Previous experience collaborating closely with marketing, design, and product teams, ideally within SaaS or technology-driven environments
  • Great project management skills
  • Experience translating product opportunities and customer needs into visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and usability
  • A passion for crafting polished experiences, emphasizing accessibility, readability, and performance
  • Experience or desire to work in fast moving 100% distributed team

U.S. base salary range for this role is $220,000 - $258,000 (CA, NY, WA) and  $210,000 - $248,000 (other US locations). Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. As a remote-first company, we strive to consider each candidate's job-related skills, location, experience, relevant education or training to determine individual base salary. Your talent partner will share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
