Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Engineer, Energy Storage
About Redwood Materials
Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2019, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.
Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Engineer, Energy Storage
Essential Duties:
You will be an early member of the Redwood Energy engineering team, taking a hands-on role in the design, development, and integration of second-life battery-based energy storage systems. This role will be first engineer on the Hardware-in-the-Loop team, in charge of developing the hardware and software architecture that allows us to quickly develop and release hardware and software with confidence critical safety and performance requirements and still met. We believe the best way to do this is with an intentionally designed, automated system that works closely with the entire product development team.
The ideal candidate is comfortable across both hardware and software, has coding or scripting experience, and is comfortable reading schematics and using an oscilloscope. If you have been designing HIL setups for years and have strong opinions about the ecosystem we want to hear them, but we also think an early career engineer with strong first-principle understanding and motivated by this problem can be successful. Most importantly, we are looking for someone highly self-driven, adaptable to a startup environment, and eager to take on novel technical challenges. If you’re excited about working in a dynamic, fast-paced setting within a new department at Redwood, we want to hear from you!
Responsibilities will include:
- Define and implement the Hardware-in-the-Loop strategy and architecture from the ground up, establishing scalable frameworks, tools, and processes that enable rapid, reliable validation of power electronics and battery management system controllers.
- Design controller validation test hardware and software, collecting cross-functional input from Software, Electrical and System engineers on requirements.
- Conduct controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing to validate functional control behavior against design specifications and project requirements
- Develop and maintain test setups, automate processes, and provide assurance safety-critical functionality is maintained across the software development life cycle.
- Contribute to a collaborative, fast-paced startup culture, where every team member plays a crucial role in achieving company milestones.
Desired Qualifications:
- BS or MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and 2+ years of experience developing application software for hardware systems
- Experience in building and maintaining hardware-software integrated setups. Strong debugging skill for test setups is required
- Strong foundation in electrical principles, circuit theory, and control systems
- Proficiency in automation scripting and control design
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform the essential job functions consistent safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards
Working Conditions:
- Environment, such as office or outdoors
- Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time.
- Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing
- Occasional work weekends, nights, or be on-call as a regular part of the job
- Occasional travel requirements
