Field Quality Engineer, Energy Storage
About Redwood Materials
Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.
Field Quality Engineer, Energy Storage
Redwood Materials is currently searching for a Field Quality Engineer to join as an early member of a new engineering team working on our Battery Energy Storage System product line. You will be responsible for ensuring the quality, reliability, and safety of deployed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets by identifying, investigating, and preventing field issues. This role works closely with Operations & Maintenance (O&M) teams that perform routine monitoring and maintenance, and with Service Engineering, which owns advanced technical escalation.
The Field Quality Engineer serves as the frontline quality owner in the field, focusing on identifying systemic quality issues, conducting structured investigations, and driving corrective and preventive actions. This role plays a critical part in reducing repeat failures, improving fleet reliability, and feeding real world learnings back into engineering, suppliers, and operational processes. You’re a doer, excited about getting your hands dirty and working in a dynamic, fast-paced setting, and want to shape a new department at Redwood.
Responsibilities will include:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for field identified quality issues across operating BESS assets
- Lead structured investigations into recurring failures, abnormal trends, or field incidents in collaboration with O&M and Service Engineering
- Perform root cause analyses using established methodologies (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone, fault tree analysis)
- Develop and document clear problem statements supported by data, field evidence, and technical observations
- Define, track, and verify corrective and preventive actions to address field quality issues
- Verify effectiveness of corrective actions through follow-up inspections, audits, and data analysis
- Support development and tracking of quality KPIs such as repeat failure rates, defect trends, and corrective action closure
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce operational burden on O&M and improve system reliability
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field
- 5+ years of experience in field quality, reliability engineering, service engineering, or commissioning support for complex electromechanical or energy systems
- Demonstrated experience supporting field-deployed assets such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), power electronics, renewable energy systems, or industrial electrical equipment
- Experience working directly with field operations, O&M technicians, and service engineering teams in a production or operational environment
- Working knowledge of root cause analysis methodologies (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone, fault trees) and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) processes
- Familiarity with field inspection procedures, commissioning documentation, and service records
- A Passion for sustainability and making the world a better place!
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform essential physical tasks such as climbing ladders, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and walking for extended periods in industrial environments
Working Conditions:
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to field locations; frequent travel required up to 40%
- Ability to work in conditions that may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while wearing appropriate PPE for extended periods of time
- Availability to work weekends, nights, or on- call as needed
