
Summer Ecology Project Associate

RES is currently accepting applications for a Summer Ecology Project Associate (Ecology Intern) based in our Richmond, VA office. In this role, you’ll work alongside ecologists, engineers, and regulatory professionals to support stream and wetland restoration projects across Virginia. You’ll spend most of your time outdoors collecting field data, with additional time supporting data entry and technical documentation.
This is a hands-on internship designed for someone who loves fieldwork, is eager to learn, and wants real experience in ecological restoration.
What your day-to-day might look like?
Around 80% of your time, you will be in the field! You will be assisting with:
- Mitigation monitoring and geomorphic surveys
- Crediting assessments for TMDL and CWA404 projects
- Site feasibility assessments
- Stream gage and groundwater well installation
- Vegetation assessments and tree surveys
- Wetland delineations
Please be advised that we perform these tasks come rain or come shine and working outside in harsh and adverse weather conditions (including both cold and hot environments) is part of the routine. You will also be walking long distances, bending, lifting heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), and performing other physical activities. Occasionally, some of our projects require extensive travel with overnight stays.
Around 20% of your time, you will be performing data entry, data processing, and technical writing based on your fieldwork. Superior writing, communication, and computer skills (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and attention to detail are paramount. Pieces you will assist with include:
- Monitoring report development
- Data entry for geomorphic surveys, vegetation assessments, wetland delineations, and credit calculations
- Graphing stream gage, temperature, and groundwater well data
We would love to talk to you if you have many of the following:
- Pursuing a degree in an environmental science field such as, but not limited to, ecology, wetland science, aquatic biology, botany, wildlife biology, fisheries, soils, hydrology, engineering, etc.
- Data entry and analysis experience
- Technical writing experience
- A love for the outdoors!
What will make you stand out?
- Knowledge of stream, wetland, and/or shoreline ecology
- Biological surveying experience
- Plant identification skills
- Examples of outdoor enthusiasm
- Experience using GPS units and ESRI products
- Understanding of CWA 404 and TMDL regulations
