Communications Consultant

Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) is a US-based, global public health organization with a mission to prevent 100 million deaths from heart disease and to make the world safer from epidemics. Since 2017, Resolve to Save Lives has partnered with low-and middle-income country governments, multilateral agencies, academic and other civil society partners, and communities to implement policies and programs to treat and control hypertension, reduce sodium intake, eliminate artificial trans fats, and strengthen systems for epidemic prevention. 

The Communications team at RTSL acts as a thought partner for new projects, ensures quality of external communications and amplifies work done by our program teams, all the while focusing on our approach of simplicity, speed and scale.

Position Purpose 

As part of a joint salt reduction communications strategy with Global Health Advocacy Incubator, RTSL seeks to better understand which types of messages and means of dissemination inspire decision-makers to pass and implement salt reduction policies. The Communications Consultant will use a series of group interviews to explore salt reduction communications and advocacy experiences of in-country partners and produce a report analyzing and compiling best practices and key examples. 

Contract Terms 

This contract is for 100 hours over a four-month period (March to June 2025). The independent contractor can be based remotely in the US or UK.  

Core Tasks or Activities 

This position will perform duties and responsibilities such as but not limited to the following: 

  • Develop interview guides using a needs assessment completed by partners in late 2024.
  • Organize and conduct 60–90-minute group interviews—one per country—with representatives from our seven focus countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
  • Develop a report that: 
    • Analyzes the results from the group interviews, answering the following questions: 
      • How have successful efforts to advance salt reduction framed the issue? 
      • What messages have partners found to be most effective with decision-makers? 
      • What have successful communications efforts had in common? 
      • What problems have partners come up against in their messaging? 
    • Offers recommendations for operationalizing the above results into future advocacy/communications plans.
  • Address feedback and questions on the report draft.
  • Attend regularly scheduled 30-minute check-ins every two weeks for the duration of the project.

Contract Deliverables 

  • Seven group interview guides 
  • One 1–3-page executive summary of findings and recommendations 
  • One 10-20-page report including an analysis of all interviews, key examples of successful advocacy shared during the interviews, and recommendations. 
  • Additional appendix to include a summary of each interview 

The Independent Contractor will submit all deliverables to the Communications Manager, CVH Communications, who will manage this contract and monitor progress toward deliverables. 

Qualifications 

Experience: 

  • Six or more years working in strategic communications or advocacy in public health, social science, public policy or a related field 
  • Six or more years working with globally diverse non-profits 

Skills & abilities: 

  • Excellent research and writing skills in English 
  • Excellent communication skills in English 
  • Experience developing interview guides and conducting interviews, surveys or qualitative research 
  • Ability to facilitate focus groups and derive insights for messaging and advocacy  
  • Ability to communicate with globally diverse external stakeholders 
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate and synthesize qualitative data  
  • Cultural competency 

Other: 

  • Able to work late or early hours to accommodate several global regions/ time zones 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Baseline knowledge of communications and advocacy related to nutrition and nutrition policy.
