This role is an Onsite Role: This role requires full-time presence at our Oxford, North Carolina office.
Overview:
The Safety Engineer serves as the site technical authority for safety engineering, hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk reduction at the Oxford manufacturing facility. The position leads technical safety programs that reduce exposure to serious injury and fatality risks through engineering controls, safety-by-design principles, process hazard analysis, ergonomics, machine safety, electrical safety, and Management of Change reviews. The role partners with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Human Resources, Quality, Security and Environmental to identify hazards, strengthen safeguards, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
Responsibilities:
Technical Safety Leadership and Risk Reduction
- Lead site-level safety engineering assessments to identify hazards and drive corrective actions using the hierarchy of controls, with preference for elimination, substitution, and engineered safeguards before administrative controls or PPE.
- Lead or facilitate Process Hazard Analyses, What-If / Checklist reviews, Job Safety Analyses, Job Hazard Analyses, and risk-ranking activities for manufacturing operations, chemical processes, maintenance tasks, and facility changes.
- Identify serious injury and fatality exposure risks, develop mitigation plans, and verify effectiveness of engineering controls and procedural safeguards.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action development for high-potential incidents, OSHA recordables, near misses, property damage incidents, and recurring safety trends.
Machine Safety, Guarding, and Equipment Safeguards
- Lead the facility machine guarding assessment program and develop risk-based action plans for safeguarding gaps.
- Review machinery, conveyors, filling equipment, mixers, compactors, powered industrial equipment interfaces, and similar manufacturing equipment for safe access, guarding, interlocks, emergency stops, and energy-control considerations.
- Partner with Engineering and Maintenance to design, specify, implement, and validate guarding improvements and other engineered controls.
- Support Pre-Startup Safety Reviews for new equipment, modified equipment, automation projects, and capital installations before release to production.
Management of Change, Capital Projects, and Safety by Design
- Participate in Management of Change reviews for new or modified equipment, chemicals, processes, materials, production layouts, utilities, and work methods.
- Provide safety input for capital projects from concept through commissioning, including equipment layout, maintenance access, ergonomics, fire protection, ventilation, LOTO provisions, confined-space implications, and emergency response considerations.
- Review specifications, drawings, and project scopes to ensure safety requirements are incorporated early in project planning.
- Verify that new or modified systems include necessary training, procedures, signage, preventive maintenance, and inspection requirements before startup.
Life-Critical Safety Programs
- Serve as technical owner or subject-matter expert for Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, arc flash / electrical safety, hot work, machinery safety, contractor safety interfaces, and other life-critical safety programs.
- Develop technical standards, inspection criteria, field-verification tools, and training materials to strengthen high-risk work controls.
- Support authorized employee qualification and competency verification for LOTO, confined space, hot work, and electrical safety programs.
- Partner with other EHS team members to validate field execution of life-critical controls and close gaps identified during inspections or observations.
Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health Exposure Controls
- Plan and coordinate industrial hygiene exposure assessments for noise, airborne contaminants, vapors, aerosols, heat stress, chemical handling, ventilation effectiveness, and other occupational exposure risks.
- Interpret sampling results and recommend corrective actions, including engineering controls, ventilation changes, process modifications, PPE updates, or training improvements.
- Support respiratory protection, hearing conservation, ergonomics, and exposure-monitoring programs with technical evaluation and data analysis.
- Partner with Occupational Health, HR, and leadership to support exposure-related follow-up while maintaining confidentiality and appropriate documentation practices.
Fire Prevention, Flammables, Aerosols, and Combustible Dust
- Evaluate flammable-liquid, aerosol, combustible-material, and ignition-source hazards associated with production, storage, transfer, compaction, maintenance, and waste-handling operations.
- Support fire-risk assessments, combustible-dust prevention, hot work controls, emergency response planning, and inspection readiness related to fire and explosion prevention.
- Partner with Environmental and Operations teams on chemical storage, secondary containment, spill prevention, and hazardous-material handling controls when safety and environmental risks overlap.
Training, Coaching, and Cross-Functional Support
- Develop and deliver technical safety training for engineers, maintenance employees, supervisors, operators, contractors, and EHS team members.
- Coach leaders and employees on hazard recognition, risk assessment, engineering controls, life-critical controls, and safe design principles.
- Support employee engagement in hazard reporting and near-miss follow-up by providing practical technical solutions to recurring risks.
- Represent EHS in cross-functional meetings, audits, project reviews, and regulatory or corporate assessments as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
- Regular presence during designated core hours of 8am – 5pm Monday through Friday is expected. Planned or urgent support outside the primary schedule, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, shutdowns, project startups, audits, and emergency events, will occur.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations and support incident command, emergency response, spill response interface, and post-event corrective action follow-up as needed.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees, including hourly teammates, supervisors, maintenance, engineering, management, corporate EHS, external consultants, and regulators.
- Ability to maintain confidential records and conversations related to incidents, exposure data, injury follow-up, investigations, and personnel-sensitive information.
- Ability to represent the company professionally with regulatory agencies, insurance representatives, consultants, contractors, and external vendors.
- Ability to balance compliance requirements, employee safety, production needs, and practical implementation in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Qualifications:
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA General Industry requirements and practical experience applying safety standards in manufacturing operations.
- Strong knowledge of machine guarding, energy control, electrical safety / NFPA 70E concepts, confined space entry, hot work, contractor safety, hazard communication, PPE, ergonomics, and emergency response practices.
- Working knowledge of chemical process safety, flammable and combustible materials, aerosols, ventilation, combustible-dust prevention, and industrial hygiene exposure assessment principles.
- Ability to perform and facilitate risk assessments, PHAs, JHAs/JSAs, What-If analyses, job-task observations, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action effectiveness reviews.
- Ability to interpret technical data, sampling results, drawings, equipment manuals, SDSs, failure modes, incident trends, and audit findings to develop practical risk-reduction solutions.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, including incident investigation, CAPA development, prioritization, and verification of corrective action closure.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools and ability to use EHS systems, SharePoint, Excel, Power BI or similar tools for reporting, dashboards, documentation control, and action tracking.
- Strong communication, facilitation, influence, and collaboration skills with the ability to prepare clear technical reports and communicate complex risks in operational terms.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or a closely related technical field.
- CSP, ASP, GSP, CIH, PE, CHMM, OSHA 30-Hour General Industry, NFPA 70E training, ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 experience, or equivalent recognized safety / technical certification.
- 5-7 years of safety engineering, manufacturing EHS, engineering, process safety, industrial hygiene, maintenance safety, or related technical risk-reduction experience.
- Experience in consumer products, cosmetics, chemical, pharmaceutical, food, or high-volume manufacturing environments with flammable materials, aerosols, chemical handling, utilities, warehousing, and multi-shift operations.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to walk manufacturing floors, warehouses, utilities, laboratories, and outdoor areas; climb stairs; access elevated platforms; and work near production equipment as needed.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, respiratory protection where required, and other task-specific PPE.
- Ability to provide planned or urgent support outside the primary schedule, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, shutdowns, project startups, audits, incident response, corrective-action follow-up, and emergency events.
- Work is performed in manufacturing, warehouse, laboratory, utility, outdoor, and office environments with potential exposure to noise, chemicals, heat, powered equipment, and active production areas.

The base pay range for this position is $76,000 - $95,000 / year; however base pay offered may vary depending on skills, experience, job-related knowledge, and geographic location. Certain positions may also be eligible for short-term incentives as part of total compensation.

Employees are covered by the company-paid basic life insurance policy and company-paid short-term disability insurance (the benefit commences upon hire and allows for a portion of base salary for up to 26 weeks if you are disabled). Other benefits offered to employees include but are not limited to the following: long-term disability, supplemental life insurances, flexible spending accounts, critical illness insurance, group legal, identity theft protection, etc. Employees are also able to enroll in our 401k Retirement Savings Plan.
Employees will also receive 3 weeks of vacation, pro-rated based on date of hire for the 1st year of employment and twelve paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Vacation will depend on role.
