Niantic’s Engineering Team is seeking interns to work on advancing our real-world augmented reality (AR) games and our developer platform and build the 3D world maps that are the foundation for Niantic’s real world Metaverse and push the frontiers of Computer Vision and Machine Learning. You’ll grow your skills quickly while being mentored by an experienced team of server, gaming, mobile, full-stack and computer vision engineers and data scientists. Our technical challenges include data consistency across distributed systems, creating compelling gameplay for a global user base working with geo data at scale, and innovating in augmented reality. Niantic Engineering leads the advancement of augmented reality and other immersive technologies while creating engaging apps for a user base in the billions. Niantic’s AR Web & AR Mapping Teams are seeking Computer Vision Interns.

In this role you’ll help build the next generation of Augmented Reality technologies on the web, build the VPS and visual maps. You will usher new exciting capabilities to augment web browsers' experience and help develop AR experiences to 'inspire people to explore the world together: e.g. Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, Image and Object Tracking, Object and Class Segmentation. Your work will run on billions of devices and provide a seamless immersive experience for millions of users.

Responsibilities

● Develop and deploy Computer Vision algorithms across desktop, mobile, and HMD platforms using WebAssembly.

● Collaborate with researchers to bring models to production and build browser-based tools for deployment.

● Follow good software engineering practices: produce testable code, apply the correct design patterns.

● Collaborate with cross-functional team members and stakeholders, including regular and reliable attendance and participation in meetings.

 

Qualifications

● Graduating Dec 2025 to June 2027 with a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Vision or related field.

● Proficiency in C++, and JavaScript/Typescript or Python.

● Knowledgeable and interested in Computer Vision topics: Simultaneous Localization and

Tracking, Feature-based Object tracking, Multi-view Geometry.

● Ability to collaborate effectively through written and verbal communications, including synchronous interactions with others.

● Ability to follow guidance and independently explore possible solutions.

 

Plus If...

● Previous internship or full-time experience in software development.

● Knowledge of real-time 3D graphics pipeline optimization for mobile platforms.

● Knowledge in Shader development.

● Knowledge in WebAssembly.

● Knowledge in benchmarking and optimizing Neural Network for edge devices.

● Knowledge of WebXR and other XR frameworks.

● Knowledge in building cloud-based and/or hybrid solutions with leading providers such

as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure.

● Experience implementing, hardening or optimizing 3d gaussian splatting, dense depth

computation, multi-view reconstruction, learning based mapping and localization models or other problems in 3D computer vision.
