
Touch Up/Rework Technician
Position Summary
The Touch-Up / Rework Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and reworking printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) and mechanical assemblies that do not meet quality standards. This position requires strong soldering skills, the ability to interpret engineering documentation, and experience performing precision repairs on electronic assemblies using hand tools and specialized equipment.
The technician will work closely with Manufacturing, Test, Quality, and Engineering teams to ensure products meet workmanship standards, IPC requirements, and customer specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Perform component-level rework and touch-up on PCBAs including SMT and through-hole components
• Remove and replace electronic components using soldering irons, hot air rework stations, and other repair tools
• Repair lifted pads, damaged traces, solder bridges, and other workmanship defects
• Perform wire modifications, jumpers, and engineering changes per documentation
• Interpret assembly drawings, schematics, BOMs, and work instructions
• Use microscopes and inspection equipment to identify defects and verify repair quality
• Conduct mechanical rework and assembly repairs including hardware replacement and structural corrections
• Document rework activity in manufacturing systems or travelers
• Support debug and test teams by troubleshooting assembly failures when required
• Maintain ESD compliance and proper handling of sensitive electronics
• Ensure repaired products meet IPC workmanship standards and internal quality requirements
Required Skills and Qualifications
• Experience performing soldering and rework on electronic assemblies
• Ability to work under microscope for fine-pitch components
• Familiarity with SMT and through-hole component repair
• Ability to read and interpret assembly documentation and engineering drawings
• Knowledge of ESD handling practices
• Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity
• Ability to work independently and follow structured repair procedures
Preferred Qualifications
• IPC certification such as IPC‑A‑610 or IPC‑7711/7721
• Experience with BGA/QFN component rework
• Prior work in electronics manufacturing or contract manufacturing
• Experience supporting failure analysis or debug teams
Physical Requirements
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
• Ability to work under magnification for detailed work
• Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally
Work Environment
This position operates in a manufacturing environment handling electronic assemblies and requires adherence to ESD and safety protocols.
