Junior Ground Systems Engineer - Instrumentation & Control

Auckland, NZ

ABOUT ROCKET LAB

Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company delivering responsive launch services, complete spacecraft design and manufacturing, payloads, satellite components, and more – all with the goal of opening access space. The rockets and satellites we build, and launch enable some of the most ambitious and vital space missions globally, supporting scientific exploration, Earth observation and missions to combat climate change, national security, and exciting new technology demonstrations.

Our Electron rocket has become the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually and has delivered more than 230 satellites to orbit, all while we work to develop Neutron, our upcoming medium-lift, reusable launch vehicle for larger constellation deployment. Our Space Systems business designs and builds our extensive line of satellites, payloads, and their components, including spacecraft that have been selected to support NASA missions to the Moon and Mars and components used on the James Webb Space Telescope.

As a Junior Instrumentation & Control Engineer, you’ll be responsible for maintaining and extending the functionality of control systems that support launch vehicles, propulsion test stands, and other critical systems. You’ll work closely with engineers, technicians, and stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered on time and meet specifications. Whether it’s implementing new software features, troubleshooting systems, or driving process improvements, your work will directly impact Rocket Lab’s success.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Maintain and enhance control systems for launch vehicle transporters, erectors, launchers, and propulsion test stands.
  • Work with internal teams across multiple departments to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including software designs, functional requirements, and system architecture.
  • Drive product and process improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability.
  • Be actively involved in project build phases and provide guidance on best practices for instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with test and operations teams to qualify systems and ensure readiness.
  • Provide remote and on-site support for installation, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Execute test plans to validate system performance and vehicle interfaces.
  • Analyse post-flight and post-test data to identify improvements.
  • Develop and maintain interface control documentation between launch vehicles and pad systems.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A solid understanding of engineering concepts and the ability to apply them to real-world systems.
  • A proactive approach to tasks, with a commitment to delivering results and meeting deadlines.
  • The ability to assess risks and propose solutions, always keeping fallback options in mind.
  • Strong communication skills and a willingness to collaborate across teams and departments.
  • A “no task is too small” mindset and a desire to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment.

Why Join Rocket Lab?

WHAT TO EXPECT

We’re on a mission to unlock the potential of space to improve life on Earth, but that’s not an easy task. It takes hard work, determination, relentless innovation, teamwork, grit, and an unwavering commitment to achieving what others often deem impossible. Our people out-think, out-work and out-pace. We pride ourselves on having each other’s backs, checking our egos at the door, and rolling up our sleeves on all tasks big and small. We thrive under pressure, work to tight deadlines, and our focus is always on how we can deliver, rather than dwelling on the challenges that stand in the way.
