About the Role

As VP of AI, you will lead Rocket Lawyer’s AI strategy and execution, driving innovation and scaling AI-powered legal solutions, with a primary focus on Rocket Copilot. Rocket Copilot is the future of accessible, efficient, and intelligent legal assistance. Designed to empower individuals, small business owners, landlords, and others, it seamlessly combines cutting-edge artificial intelligence and our unique in-house professional (IHP) expertise to simplify complex legal processes and enhance confidence in legal decision-making. As an AI-powered legal assistant, Rocket Copilot aims to offer exceptional convenience, accuracy, and speed in addressing legal matters.

You will be responsible for developing and overseeing machine learning (ML), large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and prompt engineering to enhance our platform and customer experience. This role requires a strong balance of technical expertise, leadership, and product-focused execution, ensuring AI is seamlessly integrated across our services. You will lead a team of AI engineers, data engineers, Managers and ML specialists, working closely with product, engineering, and legal teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute Rocket Lawyer’s AI strategy, including LLM fine-tuning, prompt engineering, RAG pipelines, and scalable AI deployment, with a focus on Rocket Copilot.
  • Own the roadmap for AI-driven capabilities, ensuring alignment with business objectives and user needs.
  • Lead the design and implementation or usage of AI/ML models, particularly LLMs, NLP applications, and generative AI for legal tech solutions.
  • Drive innovation in AI-driven legal assistance, contract analysis, and intelligent conversational document generation and processing.
  • Build and lead a high-performing AI team, fostering a culture of innovation, ownership, and technical excellence.
  • Collaborate with engineering leadership to integrate AI models into production systems at scale.
  • Ensure AI models are ethical, explainable, unbiased, and aligned with privacy and security standards.
  • Evaluate and implement AI infrastructure, MLOps best practices, and cloud-based AI deployments.
  • Stay ahead of AI trends, academic research, and emerging LLM techniques to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Work cross-functionally with legal, product, and customer teams to deliver user-friendly AI-powered solutions.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in AI, machine learning, and data science, with at least 5+ years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience leading LLM-driven projects, including fine-tuning, RAG, and prompt engineering.
  • Deep expertise in NLP, deep learning, and AI model deployment at scale.
  • Hands-on experience with LLMs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Mistral, Llama), vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, Weaviate, FAISS, Pgvector), and MLOps frameworks. 
  • Strong knowledge of Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, LangChain, and AI/ML cloud services. 
  • Experience deploying AI models in production-grade applications with security, reliability, and scalability.
  • Understanding of data pipelines, data engineering, and feature engineering for ML.
  • Experience with at least one of the clouds (GCP, AWS or Azure).
  • Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and ability to drive AI adoption across an organization.
  • Strong communication skills to translate complex AI concepts into business value.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working in legal tech, fintech, or heavily regulated industries.
  • Understanding of legal NLP applications, contract automation, and AI-driven compliance solutions.
  • Experience with AI safety, AI governance, and responsible AI practices.
  • Track record of publishing AI research, patents, or contributions to open-source AI projects.

Compensation
Base salary range by location:
  • San Francisco Bay Area, CA: $275,000 - $300,000
  • Colorado: $255,000 - $267,750
  • Utah, Arizona, and North Carolina: $240,000 - $252,000

 

Actual compensation packages are determined by various factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, certifications, specific work location, and performance during the interview process.
