Position Overview
RTP (Roof Technology Partners), a Skybound Service Partners company, is seeking an experienced accounting professional to join our team as a Senior Project Accountant. This role owns full-cycle project accounting and financial oversight for a portfolio of concurrent commercial roofing and construction projects.
The Senior Project Accountant partners closely with the Controller, project managers, and operations leadership to maintain accurate project financials, support forecasting and profitability analysis, identify financial risks, and ensure projects remain financially well-managed from initial setup through final closeout.
The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of project or construction accounting experience, a strong understanding of work-in-progress (WIP) and percentage-of-completion accounting, and the confidence to independently evaluate project financial performance and communicate issues and opportunities to project leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Project Accounting & Financial Management
- Own full-cycle job cost accounting for multiple concurrent construction and roofing projects, including project setup, cost coding, budgets, commitments, change orders, and ongoing budget-to-actual tracking
- Prepare and analyze monthly work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition calculations, ensuring project forecasts and financial results are complete and accurate
- Maintain and evaluate project estimated costs to complete (ETCs) in partnership with project managers and operations
- Review project financial forecasts for reasonableness, consistency, and emerging financial risks
- Monitor project budgets, committed costs, actual costs, anticipated costs, and profitability throughout the project lifecycle
- Identify cost variances, potential overruns, margin changes, and other financial risks and communicate findings to project managers and leadership
- Review and understand project contracts, subcontract agreements, change orders, schedules of values, and cost proposals for their financial impact
- Review, code, and process subcontractor and vendor invoices and ensure costs are recorded to the appropriate projects and cost codes
- Manage and reconcile project retainage, commitments, change orders, and related project accounting balances
- Reconcile job cost ledgers to the general ledger and prepare project-related journal entries for month-end and year-end close
- Support project-level cash flow forecasting and profitability reporting
Project Forecasting & WIP
- Partner with project managers to maintain accurate project forecasts, including contract value, approved and pending change orders, committed costs, anticipated costs, and ETCs
- Participate in and support recurring project forecast and WIP meetings with project managers and operations leadership
- Independently evaluate project forecasts and challenge assumptions when financial results, cost trends, or project activity indicate potential risk
- Analyze changes in projected gross profit and margin and help identify the operational or financial drivers behind significant changes
- Ensure project forecasts are supported by current project information and are consistent with accounting records
- Assist the Controller with the monthly WIP review and revenue recognition process
- Provide timely and accurate project financial information to support management reporting and decision-making
Billing, Collections & Subcontractor Compliance
- Support the Billing Coordinator with owner billing submissions, including AIA G702/G703 pay applications, schedules of values, change orders, retainage, and supporting documentation
- Monitor project billing status and accounts receivable and partner with the appropriate teams to support timely collection
- Review subcontractor payment documentation, including invoices, lien waivers, certificates of insurance, and other required compliance documentation
- Help ensure subcontractor payments are appropriately supported and consistent with contract terms, project progress, and compliance requirements
- Assist with resolving billing, payment, cost coding, and project accounting discrepancies with project teams, customers, subcontractors, and vendors
Project Closeout
- Manage the financial closeout process for assigned projects
- Ensure final billings, collections, subcontractor payments, retainage, change orders, commitments, and project costs are appropriately resolved before financial closeout
- Review final project profitability and investigate significant differences between original expectations and final results
- Ensure project accounting records and supporting documentation are complete and audit-ready
Business Partnership & Process Improvement
- Develop strong working relationships with project managers, superintendents, operations leadership, subcontractors, and internal accounting teams
- Serve as a financial resource to project teams by helping them understand project costs, forecasts, margins, billing status, and financial risks
- Maintain an independent financial perspective when reviewing project forecasts and financial results and escalate significant risks or inconsistencies to the Controller
- Identify opportunities to improve project accounting, forecasting, WIP, billing, and closeout processes
- Assist with the implementation and ongoing use of the Company's enterprise ERP system, Sage Intacct, and related construction systems
- Support external audits, surety and bonding requests, tax return preparation, and other financial reporting requirements by providing accurate project financial information
- Compile supporting schedules and documentation for financial reporting and audits
- Review the work of and mentor junior project accounting staff as assigned
- Collaborate with Operations, Corporate Accounting, and other cross-functional teams to improve consistency and financial visibility across the organization
- Take on additional responsibilities and special projects to support the Company's continued growth

- Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and accountability
