RTP Volunteer English Editor

Any

We are looking for applicants with a personal or professional interest in language, English grammar, microfinance, and/or international development.

You should be:

  • Proficient and comfortable with written English
  • Able to learn and apply Kiva loan review policy, as outlined in our volunteer resources (required reading throughout the application process and beyond)
  • Able to pay close attention to detail
  • Respectful when communicating with others
  • Able to preserve the Lending Partner’s voice while editing loans
  • Able to commit to at least 2 hours per week (i.e., about 40 loans per month) for a minimum of 6 months, though one year is preferable
  • Responsive via email--including emails from Kiva Volunteer Coordinators and Kiva Team Leaders
  • Comfortable with new technology

Please note:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age to apply.
  • IMPORTANT: You will never be asked to decide whether someone qualifies for a loan. Every loan you will review has already been approved. You will only check the information provided.
  • The online platform Kiva volunteers use is not mobile or tablet-friendly, so volunteers must have access to a computer.
  • You will sign a volunteer agreement that covers protecting the privacy of Kiva borrowers as well as a standard media release.
  • If you have a Kiva.org lending account, you should apply for this position with the same email.

Next Steps:

  1. If your qualifications and answers to the policy exercise make you a good candidate for the volunteer program, you will be asked to complete an English editing exercise with instructions about Kiva’s unique editing style.
  2. Upon successfully completing the English editing exercise, you will be invited to take training via our loan review platform. The training can be done with some flexibility for your schedule and can be completed in about four hours total.
  3. Upon completing training, you can review and edit loans at your convenience. But, again, we ask that you review a minimum of 40 loans per month - or about 2 hours of review time per week.

Important Information:

  • Please be sure to apply with the same email address associated with your kiva.org account
  • This application includes an initial policy exercise. We recommend finding time to fill out this entire application without distraction.
  • This page will time out after a significant period of inactivity, and your application will not be saved. You may consider copying, pasting, and saving your responses in another document.
  • If you are signed up for multiple volunteer opportunities, we will be unable to account for your preference, as our various languages have different onboarding timelines. We ask that you please only sign up for the Review and Translation Program volunteer opportunity that you prefer.

This exercise contains six questions that cover some of Kiva’s loan profile policies. Each question will ask you to determine whether a borrower’s profile complies with Kiva’s policies, which are linked in the document below. Reviewing each loan profile for Kiva policy compliance is a required step to becoming a volunteer. Important: This exercise is not asking you to decide whether the borrower should receive the loan. It has already been decided that they should.

Please take your time, carefully read the instructions in this document, and answer the six questions below by referring to the scenarios found within.

Can you access the Kiva Policy Exercise and the Kiva Policy Guide? (Note: If you have problems accessing the document linked above, please get in touch with reviewteam@kiva.org)
