The Staff Engineer is the go-to technical mastermind for a key product area, making sure everything runs smoothly, is built the right way, and stays on track with top-notch architecture. They lead the charge, working alongside Principal Engineers to bring big strategies to life while also mentoring and guiding all levels of engineers to keep everyone on the cutting edge. 

Their influence is felt everywhere, from big-picture improvements to hands-on guidance. By staying plugged into the technical pulse of the product area, the Staff Engineer spots potential roadblocks early and steps in with smart solutions, making sure the team delivers excellent, high-quality results. 

They’re the technical compass for the team, offering expert advice on architecture, tech choices, and project planning for more complex or high-impact deliverables. Not only do they push for the latest and greatest innovations, but they also share their deep knowledge of the business to solve problems and keep things moving forward. 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Drives cross-team technical roadmap, aligning engineers to wider technical strategy and goals
  • Facilitates cross-team feature development
    • The ability to balance multiple goals across tech/product/strategy/other teams and concerns
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to engineers in feature development whenever needed
  • Drives strategic technological initiatives, helping stakeholders understand their value and need
  • An expert on large sections of our codebase
  • Gives accurate status updates about ongoing tasks
  • A proven record of driving sweeping improvements in stability, performance, and scalability across major business-critical systems
  • Anticipates technical issues at the product level and drives architectural and design decisions to avoid them
  • Understands deeply the entire architecture for a major part of our business and is able to articulate clearly the scaling and reliability limits of that area
  • Monitor the performance of engineers on teams, and partner with Engineering Managers on mentoring and growth
  • Look for ways to reduce distractions, interruptions, and unplanned work for themselves and other engineers
  • Staff Engineer is not/does not:
    • A superstar solo engineer
    • Considered a resource in a team when making sprint commitments
    • Make changes to the product without Product Owner's and teams' approval

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Deep understanding of software engineering principles and practices, as well as proficiency in multiple programming languages and technologies
  • Technical leadership skills (be knowledgeable of emerging technologies and industry trends, strong technical writing and documentation skills, as well as familiarity with agile methodologies and development practices)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills (including the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical problems)
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment showing flexibility and adaptability in dynamic circumstances
  • Excellent time management skills (prioritization and effectively managing multiple tasks and projects)
  • Strong analytical skills (ability to comprehend and analyze business requirements and provide technical solutions accordingly)
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written, including the ability to present technical information to non-technical stakeholders, listening and interpersonal skills with a commitment to continuous self-development, positive mindset) 
  • Good level of mentoring and teaching skills

  • Excellence: Staff Engineer is responsible for creating an environment of automation and testing for the engineers they work with. They prioritize high-quality components and make sure the work of their team is scalable. In case of critical situations, they solve the crisis and provide a sustainable solution.
  • The Staff Engineer is responsible for ensuring the technical excellence of the engineers on the team and is accountable for the quality of code produced by their product area. They monitor code quality, informing Engineering Managers & Senior Engineering Managers of any problems and taking responsibility for finding a solution. Staff Engineer is self-driven, and proactive, with a strong work ethic. 
  • Collaboration: Staff Engineer has a deep understanding of the business’s technical needs and the ability to align the product teams' work with these needs. They are hands-on and stay informed about what is happening in the product. They see their role as one of developing the next generation of engineers and have strong collaboration skills, working well with Principals and other Staff Engineers. They are effective collaborators within cross-functional teams. Staff Engineer is working closely with other leaders. They are experienced at interviewing and setting high standards for new candidates and are great team players. 
  • Transparency: Staff Engineer keeps the product area informed about the company’s technical direction (e.g. technical strategies defined by Principals and Head of Technology and the way they will be executed) and communicates changes in direction as soon as possible. They provide transparency to upper management about technical challenges and debt and keep engineers informed about the expected quality of their code. They communicate transparently with Engineering Managers about problems and solutions and are open about their work both in product and non-product areas. They ensure that everyone is informed about what they are working on and what they are building. 
  • Empathy: Staff Engineer understands what information to share with whom and when, and to communicate it effectively. They are knowledgeable, approachable, and patient, able to listen to and understand the perspectives of less experienced engineers. They are passionate about education and mentorship, able to teach and coach junior, intermediate, or less experienced senior engineers in a way that is both informative and respectful. They are able to mentor engineers at different levels of understanding and provide guidance in a supportive and non-condescending manner.
  • They are expected to be technical leads of projects, knowing how to facilitate technical discussions, keep a decision log, etc. Driving execution of technology strategy in their product area, they are excellent in breaking the work down and overseeing execution, which mostly happens through planning. 
  • They have project organization skills. The Staff Engineer should have a track record of working with teams and developing individuals for growth and advancement. The ability to influence and motivate others is also a critical skill
