The Associate Principal is responsible for assisting the Managing Principal with branch office administration, financial management, business development and marketing, supervision of project teams, and management of multiple projects.
Administrative
- Supports Managing Principal and assists with leadership of branch office
- Learns branch office administrative, recruiting, staffing, and training activities
- Maintains knowledge of and assists with establishment of office policy, standards, and procedures
Financial
- Participates in RVi management meetings and reviews financial reports
- Monitors branch office financial performance with Managing Principal
- Monitors project performance metrics and provides guidance to Project Directors and Project Managers as necessary to maintain project profitability
Business Development and Marketing
- Participates in weekly and quarterly Marketing Committee meetings
- Maintains advanced knowledge of company marketing procedures and strategy
- Maintains on-going contact with existing clients
- Develops long-term relationships with potential clients and consultants
- Initiates and directs business development activities related to project-specific leads
- Coordinates RFQ responses with Director of Marketing
- Writes project proposals
Project
- Manages project agreement preparation, negotiation, and acceptance
- Reviews and approves subconsultant agreements
- Manages multiple in-house and multi-disciplinary project teams effectively
- Monitors project and client communications
- Oversees project initiation and conceptualization
- Advocates for creative project solutions that meet client goals
- Leads project presentations and client meetings
- Reviews cost estimates and project budgets
- Confirms completed project documents meet client requirements and planning/design intent
- Approves and seals construction documents
- Monitors bidding and construction administration activities
- Monitors project fees, profitability, and schedules
- Reviews project progress, prepares statements, and approves final invoices
Training
- Mentors Project Directors, Project Managers, Staff Designers and Planners, and Interns
- Participates in annual performance evaluation with Managing Principal
- Participates in staff check-in reviews and annual performance evaluations
REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Landscape Architecture or Planning degree from accredited BLA, MLA, or Planning program;
Registration and Certification
- Landscape Architect: Registered Landscape Architect with CLARB certification
- Planner: AICP certification recommended
Experience and Skills
- Minimum 10 years of experience in a private sector design or planning office
- Advanced collaborative, delegation, and coordination skills
- Advanced planning and/or design skills
- Advanced project management skills
- Advanced Microsoft Office, Adobe software skills, and CAD literacy
