About the Role

The Manager, Portfolio Accounting position will report to the Director, Portfolio Accounting and will lead, train and supervise both internal portfolio accountants and third-party property accountants. The Manager, Portfolio Accounting will oversee the operations of their assigned portfolios, which may include but are not limited to separately managed accounts, open-end structures and closed-end structures as well as the underlying real estate investments in each structure.  This includes interfacing with investors on transactions, managing cash flows, corporate governance, general ledger accounting, financial reporting, tax matters and collaboration with various internal teams as well as the outsourced property accounting services provider. Additionally, the Manager, Portfolio Accounting will lead process improvement initiatives across the accounting department. This position requires a hands-on dynamic personality – ready to lead and contribute to a growing organization.

Key Job Duties

  • Responsible for the general day-to-day maintenance of the general ledger for separate accounts and funds including closing the books for the fund entities, property accounting reviews, working with finance, investor relations, outsourced accounting providers, and other teams to meet close deadlines and reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and review general ledger accounting reconciliations, identify and research unique transactions, prepare fund roll ups and consolidations.
  • Onboard new investors, funds, and separate accounts as assigned
  • Review and provide feedback on monthly financial reporting packages and portfolio transactions (i.e. loan modifications, acquisitions, & dispositions, JV buy-outs)
  • Review and provide support on quarterly capital reconciliations, annual CAM recs and budgeting process
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly/quarterly fair value financial statements, footnotes, and internal reporting packages. Provide P&L analysis to internal stakeholders.
  • Oversee monthly/quarterly cash management, distribution analyses, review wires/book transfers and approve payable invoices for the funds
  • Project manage multiple audits and tax return filings by providing supporting documentation and assisting with the coordination of the audit and tax teams.  Coordinate tax payments to various jurisdictions as necessary.
  • Assist with quarterly fund performance & waterfall calculations
  • Lead and supervise the daily accounting process for all assigned portfolio accountants and 3rd party property accountants; coordinate with other accounting teams to manage a timely and effective close process
  • Hire, train, effectively lead and develop team members. Motivate and promote professional excellence and professional development. Provide regular feedback, assist with establishing clear priorities and goals and track against goals during the year.
  • Work closely with the Director, Portfolio Accounting on identifying and implementing process improvement initiatives, policies, controls, and documentation.
  • Assist the Director, Portfolio Accounting in researching accounting, legal and tax issues surrounding topics such as ERISA, consolidation, fund structuring, UBTI, property valuations and other fund and property matters.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to internal and external customers.

Education and Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree required; accounting/finance majors and CPA preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of general ledger accounting, public accounting and/or real estate experience. Experience in the commercial real estate and property management industry strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in monthly close, financial reporting, and cash management. Experience with fair value or fund accounting preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years delegating, managing, and prioritizing activities of direct reports, providing clarity and strong interpersonal and teamwork skills

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office; MRI accounting software or equivalent experience with enterprise accounting systems
  • Excellent communication (written & verbal), organization, problem solving and project management skills Must be a motivated self-starter with strong team leadership skills, high sense of urgency, the aptitude to think independently, and the motivation to work with a team in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to forge effective working relationships throughout accounting team and organization
  • Ability to multi-task, with attention to detail and an ability to work both independently and in a team environment

Starting Base Salary Range: $110,000 to $135,000 Annually (USD)

The starting salary for this position is an estimate, based on potential employee qualifications, operational needs and other considerations permitted by law. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the stated range based on various factors including, among other factors, location, education and training, experience, internal pay alignment, and performance. A potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions. Many candidates’ compensation will start in the bottom half of the stated range. This role is also eligible to participate in a merit-based annual bonus program, health, vision, and dental insurance plans, long and short-term disability, 401K plan, and PTO. This information is provided in connection with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, and similar requirements in California and New York. Positions located outside of these states may or may not necessarily receive the same compensation.
