Alzheimer’s Disease Translational Research Intern

US Remote

At Sage Bionetworks, we believe in the power of open science and interdisciplinary collaboration to create a new vision of human health. We strive for actionable biomedical insights through the responsible sharing and reuse of data, all guided by our deep scientific expertise and diligent governance controls.

We're a dynamic, adaptable team, and at Sage, we highly value individuals who can flexibly navigate various roles and functions. Diversity in experiences, backgrounds, and identities is essential for our rich culture of learning and collaboration. Our partnerships, both within Sage and with external communities, are founded on principles of trust, transparency, and a commitment to growth. Together, we are leaving a lasting imprint on the fields of science and medicine.

In this role you will be a member of the Alzheimer’s Disease Translational Research Team working on a variety of National Institutes on Aging-supported programs focused on Alzheimer’s Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. You will apply your skill as an Alzheimer’s Disease Translational Research Intern by engaging in epigenetic and other-omic research from the AD Knowledge Portal and other public resources. The ideal candidate will have strong computational biology/bioinformatics skills as applied to multi-omic data, and will have enthusiasm for engaging with scientists and researchers across many disciplines. An example project might include applying pre-processing and normalization protocols for epigenetic data, and running differential methylation analyses to provide summary tables available on synapse. Harmonization and meta-analysis across different cohorts, and comparisons across brain regions, will also be considered. Lastly, these data may be evaluated for associations of epigenetic biomarkers of aging (the “biological clock”) and associations with Alzheimer’s disease across different brain regions. Does a project like this sound exciting to you? Does this sound like a good fit for your skill set and research interests? Do you want to be an integral part of a team that includes computational biologists, research ethicists, software engineers, and data librarians? If so, could be our next Intern!

What you’ll be doing:

  • Scientific Research: Develop innovative research initiatives using exploratory and hypothesis-driven data analysis on complex, high-dimensional datasets.
  • Analysis and Modeling: Utilize advanced statistics, machine learning methods, and study design expertise to pose research questions and analyze and interpret data.
  • Methods Development: Create and document new methods, pipelines, and tools for data analysis, and adhere to standards of reproducible research.
  • Dissemination: Communicate research findings through publication of peer-reviewed research papers, maintain detailed records, present to funders and collaborators, and participate in research conferences and workshops.

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Are passionate about open science and collaboration, working with complex data, and supporting scientific research.
  • Are pursuing or recently received a M.S. or Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or related discipline; or commensurate experience.
  • Have 1 year of research experience in a relevant field.
  • Are experienced and well-versed in data extraction, data cleaning, complex statistical analysis, and machine learning techniques using tools like R or Python.
  • Recognize the importance of applying critical thinking and thoughtful practices in your role, striving to ensure inclusivity, accessibility, and relevance for everyone.

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
