Senior Staff, Robotics Systems Architect - Robot Intelligence

665 Clyde Avenue, Mountain View, CA, USA

Lab Summary:

The Robot Intelligence Lab at Samsung Research America is a new facility dedicated to advancing the field of robotics through cutting-edge research and development. The lab’s mission is to develop advanced technologies to power intelligent robotic systems capable of manipulation, navigation, and complex reasoning for a variety of high-impact application areas. To achieve this mission, the lab collaborates closely with external entities such as universities, startups, and government labs, as well as with several Samsung Product and Advanced Research labs.

Position Summary:

Samsung Research America is looking for a Robotics Systems Architect to own the end-to-end software architecture for our robot platform, driving technical decisions that shape how hardware and software integrate at scale. This is a high-impact, high-autonomy role: you won’t inherit a mature codebase—you’ll build the foundations that make it possible.

As an early team member, you’ll work directly across software teams (reasoning, dexterity, perception, simulation) to integrate their work into a cohesive platform. You’ll establish the architectural patterns, engineering practices, and infrastructure that allow rapid iteration today and maintainable growth tomorrow. This includes defining component interfaces, building CI/CD pipelines, containerizing environments, and implementing package management and deployment strategies—essentially, laying the technical groundwork for a production robotics system.

Samsung’s unique advantage in the consumer electronics market and growing focus on AI and robotics will provide you with exciting technical challenges and a rewarding career experience. By leveraging Samsung’s vast product ecosystem to deliver novel user experiences, your work will define Samsung’s future in robotics and significantly impact real-world users.

 Position Responsibilities:

  • Guide cross-platform robotics software architecture, including component interfaces, dependencies, and integration across software and hardware.
  • Establish practical guidelines for maintaining the codebase, including repository organization, coding standards, code reviews, testing, and documentation.
  • Develop and integrate Python and C++ software within ROS/ROS2-based systems.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automated integration tests for simulation and physical robots.
  • Maintain Docker-based development and runtime environments across x86-64 (Intel/AMD) and ARM platforms.
  • Improve software deployment, logging, and troubleshooting workflows for robot computers and shared lab systems.
  • Support reproducible AI development environments and cloud-based training workflows in collaboration with researchers.

 Required Skills:

  • MS degree in CS/EE/Robotics, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • 16+ years experience conducting state-of-the-art robotics R&D
  • Proficiency in Python and C++, with experience developing and maintaining Linux-based software.
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2 and hands-on integration with robotics hardware.
  • Experience designing software components and defining clear interfaces within complex systems.
  • Practical experience with Docker, Git, CI/CD, and automated testing.
  • Ability to establish maintainable engineering practices while supporting fast-moving research.
  • Strong troubleshooting, collaboration, and documentation skills.
