Founding AI/ML Engineer
About Us: Savant is transforming how healthcare and life sciences organizations unlock the value trapped in unstructured medical data. Our platform combines cutting-edge large language models (LLMs) with domain-specific quality controls to convert free-text clinical records into structured, analysis-ready data — efficiently, accurately, and at scale. We work with leading institutions across healthcare, life sciences, and research, supporting faster studies, sharper insights, and better care. Backed by Roivant (NASDAQ: ROIV), Savant is built for organizations that see structured data not just as an output, but as a foundation for innovation.
The Opportunity: We’re hiring a Founding AI/ML Engineer to help architect and build the core infrastructure that powers Savant’s data structuring platform. You’ll work at the intersection of machine learning, data engineering, and real-world clinical data to develop robust, scalable pipelines to apply LLMs and other models to messy, high-stakes datasets. This is a hands-on, high-trust role with direct impact on how we deliver value to partners, from first pilot to scaled deployment. If you want to help build an LLM-powered data product from the ground up and see your code move the needle for healthcare innovation this role is for you.
Some things you might work on:
- Setting up and iterating on tooling for running inference workloads at scale
- Develop and refine pipelines that apply large language models (LLMs) to extract, structure, and validate clinical information from free-text records
- Prototype, evaluate, and optimize techniques for information extraction, entity linking, data normalization, and uncertainty estimation
- Work closely with clinical, product, and engineering teams to integrate domain knowledge into model workflows
- Develop tooling and internal infrastructure for quality assurance, observability, and feedback loops
- Prototype and deploy systems for prompt tuning, evaluation, and performance tracking across varied datasets
- Own the interface between research prototypes and production-grade systems
This role will be a good fit for you if:
- 3+ years experience building and deploying ML or AI systems in production
- Strong Python engineering skills with experience in building scalable, testable codebases
- Hands-on experience with modern ML/NLP frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, Hugging Face Transformers, spaCy)
- Practical experience working with unstructured or semi-structured data at scale
- Deep familiarity with LLM lifecycle: prompt design, evaluation, fine-tuning, observability
- Comfort working in fast-paced, high-ambiguity environments where requirements evolve
Bonus points:
- Prior experience with clinical data (e.g., EMRs, registries, labs, imaging, pathology)
- Familiarity with model monitoring, data validation, and performance drift tooling
- Exposure to healthcare compliance (e.g., HIPAA, de-identification pipelines)
- Startup experience — or the desire to operate like a founder within a fast-moving team
Why This Role Is Different:
- Full-stack AI ownership: from data to model to deployment
- Deep product impact: your work becomes part of the core product, not a side experiment
- End-to-end visibility: collaborate closely with leadership, clinical, and engineering
- Mission-driven: help solve one of healthcare’s most pressing data infrastructure challenges
Base salary for this role will be determined during the interview process and will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to prior experience, relevant expertise, current business needs, and market conditions. The expected base salary for the role will generally be between $130,000 to $180,000 per year, with significant equity. The final salary offered may be outside this range based on individual circumstances and business and market conditions.
Base salary if hired is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include other components such as discretionary bonuses and Company-sponsored benefit programs.
This position is at-will and Savant reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance and business and market conditions.
Savant provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.
