Litigation Counsel (California)
Scale LLP, a modern, fully distributed law firm, is seeking a midlevel attorney to join our growing litigation practice. Our firm is built for high-performing attorneys who want the freedom to shape and grow their practices, own their career path, and manage direct client relationships without the bureaucracy and overhead of traditional Big Law.
The Pitch
If you’re an experienced California litigator looking for meaningful work, greater autonomy, and the stability of at least 1,000 guaranteed hours, this Counsel opportunity offers the chance to build your practice while working alongside a highly respected litigator on complex matters involving some of the most recognizable names in the sports, recreation, hospitality, resort, and adventure industries.
You’ll have the opportunity to support clients including ski resorts, mountain bike parks, hotels, venues, equipment manufacturers and retailers, and industry trade associations, while gaining exposure to complex liability, catastrophic injury, risk management, and employment matters. For an attorney who enjoys the outdoors and wants their legal practice to connect with these industries, this is a particularly unique opportunity.
Who We Are:
Scale LLP is a national, full-service law firm built for the realities of modern legal practice. Founded by former tech GCs, Scale was created to rethink the traditional law firm model - removing inefficiency and outdated economics while preserving what matters most: exceptional legal work, sophisticated clients, and professional credibility. Our mission? Build the best remote law firm in the country. Scale provides attorneys with a modern practice model that aligns ownership, autonomy, and economics with the value attorneys create for their clients. Scale's attorneys work for a variety of clients across Corporate, Intellectual Property, and Litigation practice groups. Originally founded to support innovative startups, Scale has evolved into a trusted partner for clients at every stage — from emerging ventures to mature enterprises and public companies.
How We Work:
Scale attorneys operate within a transparent, collections-based compensation model intentionally designed to align compensation with ownership and responsibility. Economics are linear and predictable, allowing attorneys to clearly see the connection between the work they do for clients and the value they create. The model is designed to support sustainable, high-quality practices - without opaque formulas, partnership taxes, or unnecessary politics.
Who We’re Seeking
We’re looking for an experienced California litigation attorney with strong pre-trial and law-and-motion experience who thrives in a fast-paced environment, exercises sound judgment, and can independently manage significant aspects of litigation matters.
This role is ideal for an attorney who is confident handling day-to-day case responsibilities, enjoys solving problems, and is comfortable taking ownership without requiring close supervision. You’ll work closely with the Partner on sophisticated litigation matters, including catastrophic injury and liability disputes involving the ski, mountain biking, outdoor recreation, hospitality, resort, and adventure industries, as well as employment defense matters for Fortune 500 companies and insurance carriers.
Qualifications:
- Have at least 10 years of litigation experience, with a strong background in civil litigation.
- Be licensed to practice in California.
- Have strong legal writing skills and experience drafting dispositive motions and other substantive motions, as well as motions to compel, meet-and-confer correspondence, and other pre-trial filings.
- Can independently manage significant portions of a case and confidently handle routine client and case-related inquiries.
- Exercise sound judgment and proactively identify issues and solutions without requiring close supervision.
- Produce thoughtful, concise, and high-quality work product with strong attention to detail.
- Are highly responsive, organized, and comfortable managing multiple active matters in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Communicate effectively with clients and colleagues, providing timely updates and practical recommendations.
- Experience with catastrophic injury, premises liability, employment defense, risk management, or matters involving the outdoor recreation or hospitality industries is a plus.
