Summary/Objective: A (Full Time) Grossing Technician at our Pathology Lab in the Financial District. To perform the duties of the Grossing Technician per the Laboratory’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The Grossing Technician will adhere to and support our culture of compliance and safety by following all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with attention to detail, accuracy and professionalism at all times.
NYS pathology lab and Mohs clinic providers and staff positions are mandated W-2 employment status positions as required by applicable laws and regulations.

Essential Functions: Daily essential function of the Grossing Technician are listed below. Details on how each function is to be performed is outlined in the SOP manual. The SOP manual is to be reviewed by all Grossing Technician upon hire, when any updates occur and annually.
- Performs tissue description, dissection, and sectioning for optimal diagnostic evaluation of small uncomplicated skin specimens such as shaves, punches and excisions.
- Reviews specimens for completeness and accuracy, including site and patient identification.
- Selects appropriate processing times and special procedures for tissues (nails, alopecia, hair mounts)
- Troubleshoots and resolves technical problems involving methodology, technique, and instrumentation utilization in the gross area/room.
- Performs maintenance and quality control on instruments as applicable.
- Maintains a safe working environment.
- Monitors supply and inventory.
- Perform other histology-related work as needed (embedding, microtomy, block/slide filing) once properly trained on all related SOPs prior to completing any work.
- Actively supports and assists in implementation and monitoring of quality control and quality assurance policies.
Qualifications:
- Prior work experience of six months is desired in order to gain familiarity on-the-job with histology techniques.
- Experience in large-scale organization or high-volume production environment preferred to gain seasoned familiarity with processing specimens in production environment.
- Should be familiar with most major techniques for staining and special staining.
- Analytical skills necessary for processing slides under tight deadlines and general supervision; should have ability to identify specific specimens for supervisory follow-up.
- Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed in in the education required section) OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
- An associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution OR have education and training equivalent to such degree that includes:
- At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either
- 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
- 24 semester hours of science courses that include -
- 6 semester hours of chemistry
- 6 semester hours of biology and
- 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry in any combination
- At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either

Histotechnician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Pathologist Assistant license is required. **Tech II ONLY**
Hourly Pay Range
$18 - $23 USD
