Technical Team Lead, DevOps (Shanghai based)

CH - Shanghai, China; ES - Barcelona, Spain; IE - Dublin, Ireland; SG - Singapore
Scopely is looking for a Technical Team Lead (DevOps)  to join our Star Trek Fleet Command team in Shanghai (relocation required if you're currently not in Shanghai).

At Scopely, we care deeply about what we do and want to inspire play, every day - whether in our work environments alongside our talented colleagues, or through our deep connections with our communities of players. We are a global team of game lovers who are developing, publishing and innovating the mobile games industry, connecting millions of people around the world daily.

Star Trek Fleet Command's ongoing success goes from strength to strength. Our in-house developed 4X MMO was launched in 2018 and continues to evolve, being consistently one of the top 10 gross revenue Massive Multiplayer Strategy games on the market.

What You Will Do

We are looking for a Technical Team Lead (TTL) to lead and manage a DevOps team based in China. This role supports two distinct live service products:

  • The global version of the game, running on AWS cloud infrastructure.
  • The China-specific version, deployed on Tiancity infrastructure, with its own deployment architecture and compliance needs.

This role combines hands-on technical expertise with people management and leadership responsibilities. The ideal candidate is not only a strong infrastructure engineer but also a proven team leader who can grow and mentor others, set clear expectations, and align local execution with global engineering strategy. You will report into global infrastructure leadership and act as the local point of accountability for DevOps excellence.

  • Lead and manage a local DevOps team in China, owning hiring, performance reviews, career development, and day-to-day team operations in alignment with Scopely’s global expectations for Engineering Managers.
  • Oversee and coordinate infrastructure support for two live environments:
    • The global platform, running on AWS (ECS, Terraform, GitLab CI, etc.)
    • The China platform, hosted on Tiancity infrastructure, with distinct tooling, architecture, and compliance workflows.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with global teams in the US and Europe, acting as the local owner and communicator for technical delivery.
  • Guide the team through infrastructure design and delivery, including CI/CD systems, observability, automation, cost optimization, and cloud tooling.
  • Act as a hands-on technical leader, making architectural decisions and reviewing critical work, while delegating and empowering team members to grow.
  • Facilitate 1:1s, career growth plans, mentorship programs, and performance feedback loops. Create a culture of ownership and continuous learning.
  • Build and maintain healthy cross-timezone collaboration habits with stakeholders from game, backend, SRE, QA, and platform teams.
  • Align with and influence global infrastructure strategy while tailoring local implementation for regional success.

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or Cloud Infrastructure roles, ideally in a high-scale, real-time environment (e.g., games, mobile apps, distributed platforms).
  • Previous leadership experience as a team lead, tech lead, or manager—demonstrated ability to coach and elevate engineers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication in both English and Mandarin.
  • Technical knowledge of AWS services (EC2, RDS, IAM, VPC, S3, etc.) and Infrastructure-as-Code, especially Terraform.
  • Experience managing containerized services, ideally on ECS or Kubernetes, and supporting CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI preferred).
  • Familiarity with observability stacks (Datadog, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus), and operational best practices (e.g. alerting, dashboards, SLOs).
  • Hands-on scripting and automation experience (e.g., Python, Bash, or Go).
  • Comfortable working across timezone boundaries, leading projects that involve global infrastructure teams.
  • Deep understanding of DevOps culture, agile methodologies, and service ownership.

Bonus Points:

  • Prior experience managing hybrid infrastructure models, such as working with region-specific providers like Tiancity, Tencent, or Alibaba Cloud.
  • Familiarity with game development infrastructure, particularly supporting Unity CI pipelines or live multiplayer environments.
  • Experience navigating compliance requirements for Chinese deployments (e.g. ICP, local hosting rules).
  • Background in managing disaster recovery, fault tolerance, and deployment strategies (e.g., blue/green, canary).
  • Comfortable with project management methodologies (Agile/Scrum/Kanban) and driving delivery through metrics.
