The Indirect Tax Manager will be a hands-on partner to the business, working closely with Finance, Accounting, Legal, and Business teams to translate indirect tax requirements into practical, scalable processes and advice. This is an opportunity to help shape a high-performing global tax function in a fast-moving interactive company.
What You Will Do:
- Own the day-to-day coordination of Scopely's global indirect tax compliance calendar, partnering with external advisors and internal stakeholders to deliver timely, accurate filings, payments, registrations, and renewals for sales and use tax, VAT/GST, digital services tax, gross receipts, and other transaction-based taxes.
- Prepare or review monthly, quarterly, and annual indirect tax accounting records and reconciliations, including tax payable and receivable accounts, accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, and P&L impact, in collaboration with Accounting and Finance across the U.S., EMEA, APAC, and other markets.
- Monitor nexus, registration, taxability, and filing requirements across jurisdictions and business lines, and maintain clear documentation supporting tax positions.
- Advise on indirect tax implications of digital products, in-app purchases, subscriptions, web sales, promotions, live operations, merchandise, events, and other business initiatives.
- Evaluate the indirect tax impact of commercial arrangements and distribution models, including app stores, payment providers, merchant-of-record providers, third-party distribution channels, and licensing agreements.
- Partner with Legal, Corporate Development, and other business teams on contract reviews, new country launches, product changes, and go-to-market initiatives.
- Partner with Accounting on indirect tax requirements in Scopely's ERP, billing, and e-commerce processes. Help evaluate and implement tax engines and related technology, such as Avalara or Vertex.
- Collaborate with Finance Systems, Engineering, and other teams to ensure accurate tax configuration, testing, reporting, and data quality for new products, countries, platforms, and payment flows.
- Coordinate indirect tax audits, notices, inquiries, and information requests with tax authorities, auditors, and outside advisors; manage responses and remediation.
- Research tax law and monitor legislative and regulatory developments, assess business impacts, and communicate practical recommendations to non-tax stakeholders.
- Build and improve the indirect tax function through standardized processes, internal controls, automation, documentation, and data-quality checks.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on global indirect tax within Scopely, educating stakeholders on key concepts, requirements, and operational responsibilities.
- Assist the VP, Global Tax with M&A, tax due diligence, ad hoc projects, and other strategic initiatives that support Scopely's continued expansion.
What You Will Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or a related field.
- 7+ years of progressive indirect tax experience, including strong U.S. sales and use tax and international VAT/GST experience; multinational or global experience preferred.
- CPA, CTA, or equivalent professional qualification preferred.
- A combination of Big Four or other public accounting experience and in-house industry experience is highly preferred.
- Experience managing external tax advisors, vendors, and tax authorities while remaining hands-on and accountable for the underlying work product.
- Strong technical knowledge of U.S. sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, international VAT/GST, digital services tax, ESS, and other transaction-based taxes, including nexus, taxability, registrations, and multi-jurisdictional compliance.
- Solid understanding of how indirect tax interacts with digital products, in-app purchases, subscriptions, platform/storefront distribution, e-commerce, and merchant-of-record models.
- Strong accounting fundamentals and experience with ERP, billing, e-commerce, or indirect tax technology systems, such as Oracle, Avalara, or Vertex.
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large transactional data sets; experience with tax data, workflow, automation, or AI tools is a plus.
- Experience in digital products, technology, gaming, entertainment, e-commerce, or another multinational business is preferred.
- Direct experience with indirect tax audits, notices, and authority interactions in the U.S. and/or internationally.
- Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to understand complex issues, assess risk, and document clear, supportable positions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical tax concepts into practical guidance for non-tax stakeholders.
- Collaborative, self-motivated, and resourceful, with a strong sense of ownership, consistent attention to detail, and the ability to manage shifting priorities and competing deadlines.
