JOB LOCATION

This is a HYBRID position requiring on-site work in Northern and Southern California (California residents encouraged to apply), and other US sites.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Up to 50% of the time. Travel as needed to support group objectives (domestic and international); including regular travel to Northern and Southern California, including other US locations to conduct benchwork. 

COMPENSATION

$94,000 - $141,000 / year, Exempt, with a discretionary bonus of up to 10%.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Sensei Ag is seeking a Research Scientist with a strong background in plant biology or related field, experimental design, and data analysis to join our dynamic and collaborative R&D team. In this role, the Research Scientist will lead and contribute to the design and execution of research projects spanning areas such as plant science, product development, and nutrition. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in maintaining high experimental standards and ensuring scientific rigor throughout all stages of research. Additionally, this position will involve managing and mentoring a team of research associates, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation within the team. 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Design and execute experiments across various research areas. 
  • Recruit, supervise, and mentor Experimental Research Associates. 
  • Provide technical expertise in experimental design, benchwork protocols, and data interpretation.  
  • Develop, optimize and document standard operating procedures for benchwork. 
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of methods and results. 
  • Stay current with scientific literature and implement relevant techniques. 
  • Collaborate with leadership to align research efforts with Sensei's mission to improve human nutrition. 
  • Contribute to setting quarterly/annual scientific goals for R&D. 
  • Communicate key findings to R&D and Sensei leadership. 

SKILLS and EXPERIENCE YOU WILL NEED

  • Minimum of 3 years of industry experience (post-grad) in plant biology, nutrition, farming, or agriculture.
  • MS or PhD in plant biology, biochemistry, microbiology or a related field.
  • Proven ability to lead and conduct rigorous experiments and interpret results in wet and dry lab settings.
  • Experience in managing and mentoring team members with various levels of research experience 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with a track record of preparing reports and sharing research findings. 
  • Strong ability to diagnose and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and protocols. 
  • Adaptability to new technologies and laboratory methods 
  • Experience analyzing, visualizing, and interpreting data in Python, MATLAB, R, or similar. 
  • Desired familiarity and experience with various molecular biology and biochemical techniques including but not limited to sample collection/preparation, sample extraction (DNA/RNA/protein), sample quantification, PCR/RT-PCR, next generation sequencing, and HPLC.  

Bonus points if you have...

  • Experience applying scientific pursuits to address business needs. 
  • Experience with nutritional content of vegetables, leafy greens or fruits is strongly preferred.  
  • Experience in other controlled environment crops is desired.
