Senior Controls Engineer

About Seurat

Seurat is transforming manufacturing for people and our planet by delivering a scalable additive manufacturing solution to fundamentally change how products are made. Seurat’s proprietary Area Printing process, developed at Lawrence Livermore National Labs (LLNL), allows metal components to be manufactured at price points and quality levels that compete directly with conventional manufacturing techniques, enabling the reshoring of supply chains and promoting the decarbonization of industry. Seurat has raised over $180M and is backed by leading venture partners like Capricorn, NVentures (NVIDIA), True Ventures, General Motors Ventures, Denso, Porsche SE, SIP global partners, Honda, Xerox Ventures/Myriad Venture Partners, Cubit Capital, Siemens Energy, and Maniv Mobility.

Technology Development Group
This is a rare opportunity to play a key role in Seurat’s evolution into an end-to-end high-volume metal additive contract manufacturing company.  The Technology Development team is shaping Seurat’s future by continues innovation of new materials, liquid crystal sciences, pulsed-laser technology, and light valves development.

What to Expect
As a Senior Controls Engineer within our Controls team, you’ll be working on-site at Seurat’s headquarters in Wilmington Massachusetts.  You will be responsible for owning and implementing machine controls solutions for Seurat’s novel metal additive manufacturing Area Printing technology.  This includes controls design, software design/programming, debug of hardware/software, acceptance testing, and installation/integration at the print operations facility.

What You'll Do

  • Program Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), GUI interfaces and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) control systems.
  • Design, configure and program motion control systems (e.g. Delta Tau Power PMAC).
  • Program in languages such as IEC61131-3 (Structured Text mostly), C++ and some C#.
  • Configure, commission, and tune servo systems (motors, drives and VFDs) for fast and smooth operation.
  • Develop code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable and reusable.
  • Understand and translate stakeholder requirements into technical specifications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify control system needs and implement solutions.

 What You’ll Bring

  • 3+ years' experience in related fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science or related.
  • Object-oriented Design (OOD) and Object-oriented Analysis (OOA).
  • Advanced PLC programming language (IEC 61131-3) experience, Structured Text and safety Ladder Logic.
  • Programming C/C++ in a PLC environment.
  • Experience commissioning complex multi-axis servo systems (centralized and distributed motion control) with varied actuators, such as rotary, linear, voice coil and closed/open-loop steppers.  Preferably using Delta Tau Power PMAC controllers.
  • Demonstrated ability to test, debug and solve practical problems, with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with industrial sensors, actuators, pneumatic manifolds, proximity switches, proximity switches, flow and temperature sensors, servos, VFDs, and stepper system.
  • Experience defining, I/O systems for PLCs, and interfaces to sensors and motion systems using distributed and local I/O buses (e.g. EtherCAT, IO-Link).
  • Understanding TwinCAT ADS Interface PLC or similar PLC APIs to access PLC variables and construct rudimentary HMIs.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in control system design integrating multiple axes of motion and various types of analog and digital sensors.
  • Experience with software configuration management and source control systems (such as Azure DevOps/Git).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science or related.
  • C++ coding experience as a Function Block (FB) in PLCs.
  • C# coding experience for rudimentary HMIs; preferably using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).
  • Experience programming Beckhoff PLC systems (TwinCAT 3+).
  • Experience designing, programming and commissioning controllers with linear, voice coil and galvo drive systems in sub-millisecond regimes; preferably Delta Tau Power PMAC and MACRO motion networks.
  • Experience commissioning mechatronic servo systems using Yaskawa Sigma-7 drives in position control mode over EtherCAT.
  • Experience commissioning and tuning Copley servo drives.
  • Advanced understanding of mechatronics and interfacing concepts.
  • Metal additive manufacturing / 3D printing industry experience.
