Position Overview:
Reporting to the CFO the newly created position of Senior Accounting Manager will manage the daily functions of the accounting department for the nonprofit San Francisco AIDS Foundation including payroll, accounts payable, general ledger and cash management. Manages the monthly general ledger financial close process and prepares monthly financial statements. Oversees the annual audit process and completes the annual nonprofit tax returns for SFAF. The position provides recommendations for improvements to processes to ensure proper controls over Foundation assets. Coordinates and collaborates with other departments to ensure financial transactions are controlled, timely, and accurate. Will lead and support a small accounting team.
Essential Duties:
- Experience applying GAAP GASB (nonprofit) accounting standards.
- Manages monthly financial closing process including general ledger updates and preparation of monthly financial statements.
- Manages the financial / accounting process and reporting to ensure accuracy and completeness of reports. Updates report distribution for staff changes and provides training as needed.
- Analyzes various financial reports to ensure completeness and accuracy. Ensures reports provide appropriate information for management to make sound business decisions. Reviews and approves account reconciliations for accuracy and timeliness; directs resolution of any issues in a timely manner.
- Oversees the timely and accurate filing of payroll and tax reporting as required by government and regulatory agencies.
- Oversees the annual external financial audit to ensure timely and accurate completion. Reviews external financial statements in accordance of nonprofit standards. Assists with preparation of annual nonprofit tax returns (990 and 199).
- Manages relationships with outside system support organizations (ADP, Crestwood, Expensify, Dynamics) to resolve issues and ensure Foundation systems and processes are maintained efficiently and adequately.
- Supervises and evaluates accounting staff to maintain an efficient department.
- Manages payroll staff, payroll system, and associated payroll operations.
- Assists in leading cross departmental projects to improve processes, increase efficiencies and implementation of new systems.
- In conjunction with CFO and Director, Revenue Accounting & Financial Systems, review financial policies and procedures and recommend changes to improve control and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
- Provides excellent customer service to multiple departments to resolve issues and answer questions – updates systems and processes as applicable based on review of issues.
- Position will also drive the annual financial audit.

Essential Qualifications:
- Finance knowledge: Hands-on experience applying advanced accounting principles, services, and management - particularly in a nonprofit setting. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), general knowledge of payroll and tax regulations.
- Grants and Contracts exposure: Experience / exposure to federal or state-level grants and service agreements / contracts.
- Business ability: Ability to train and mentor employees to ensure they meet the requirements of the department and job functions. Strong problem-solving skills.
- Communication skills: Demonstrates strong and effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to convey difficult information to employees and others.
- Judgment: Exhibits sound and accurate judgment; can clearly explain reasoning for decisions; includes appropriate people in decision-making process; demonstrates persistence and overcomes obstacles.
- Financial Systems: Interest and experience scaling accounting systems, processes, and working with ERP-level systems.
- Adaptability: Adapts to changes in work duties, organization structure and changing priorities.
- Problem Solving: Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner, works with others to solve complex problems.
- Customer Service: Ability to work comfortably with diverse populations, with sensitivity to issues concerning HIV and all disabilities. Responds efficiently and cordially to requests for service and assistance.
- Professionalism: Reacts well under pressure; treats others with respect and consideration; follows through on commitments
- Dependability: Completes tasks on time; takes responsibility for own actions; can be relied upon.
- Software Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer knowledge required. Payroll software system and processing (ADP).
- Financial Audit: experience supporting the annual financial audit process, with preference to having directly managed annual financial audit.
Supervision: Two to Three Staff-Accountants
Physical Requirements and Work Environments:
- Skill in operating equipment such as a personal computer, copy machine and telephone system. Ability to perform routine bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching. Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Relevant Field.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of work in nonprofit accounting and/or financial management required.
- Experience with nonprofits environment required.
- Experience working with Audits and System Migration highly regarded.
- Experience helping drive change, policies, or systems highly regarded.
This position will have access to protected health information (PHI) and may only access, use or disclose the minimum information necessary to perform their designated role on behalf of San Francisco AIDS Foundation, regardless of the extent of access provided.
Work Environment:
This position is primarily located at 940 Howard, San Francisco, however it may occasionally require traveling to other office locations or off-site meetings as required by the job. Role may include evening and weekend coverage.

COMPENSATION: Max of $130,000 salary based on experience.
