Chief Financial Officer
Job Title: Chief Financial Officer
Location: Remote (with occasional travel as needed)
Company Overview: At Shaper Capital, we’re on a mission to partner with incredible people to build companies that shape the world. Shaper Capital was founded by Travis May, who led the two biggest data companies created in the last 20 years (LiveRamp and Datavant); we’ve launched six companies over the past year, creating data businesses that follow similar playbooks across industries.
By joining Shaper today, you’ll be part of a small, ambitious team driven by the belief that the world’s greatest problems have yet to be solved and the most transformative companies have yet to be built. We empower our portfolio companies to create businesses that transform industries, and we believe in hiring individuals who are smart, nice, and get things done. We invest in hiring high potential and humble individuals who thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments and can rapidly grow their responsibilities as we reimagine company creation.
Role Overview: We are looking for an ambitious, high-performing Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join Shaper Capital. This is not your traditional CFO role. You’ll play a dual function:
- Fractional CFO for Portfolio Companies: About 75% of time spent acting as a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves financial leader for our portfolio companies, working with leadership to provide financial insights and guidance to improve business performance while establishing strong financial foundations—from closing the books to building models and budgets.
- Strategic Leader for Shaper Capital: About 25% of time spent providing Shaper with financial oversight, strategic advice, and leadership on new ventures, M&A opportunities, and Shaper’s growth trajectory. Akin to a Berkshire Hathaway, we consider ourselves as pioneering a new structure of company, and looking for a leader to help us think creatively about how we create value over the decades ahead.
This role requires someone who thrives in early-stage environments, is eager to solve complex financial challenges, and is comfortable operating both at a strategic level and in the financial trenches.
Key Responsibilities:
Fractional CFO for Portfolio Companies:
- Serve as a hands-on financial leader for early-stage companies, helping them close books, build budgets, and establish financial processes from scratch.
- Provide strategic financial advice to portfolio CEOs, acting as a thought partner on growth, unit economics, and business modeling.
- Support fundraising efforts for portfolio companies, including preparing financial models, investor materials, and due diligence processes.
Financial Leadership at Shaper:
- Partner with the CEO to guide Shaper’s financial strategy, growth opportunities, and new venture development.
- Lead M&A initiatives, providing strategic and financial insights to support acquisitions and integrations.
- Manage Shaper’s internal financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
Team Building & Operational Excellence:
- Build and manage a high-performing finance team over time, both at Shaper and within portfolio companies as they scale.
- Implement financial systems, processes, and tools that support efficient scaling across the Shaper ecosystem.
Key Qualifications:
- Experience: Proven financial leadership experience in early-stage, high-growth companies. Strong preference for candidates with startup or entrepreneurial backgrounds. Experience leading M&A, fundraising processes, and working closely with founders and executive teams.
- Skills: You embody high performance, you’re a self-starter and self-motivated, and willing to roll up your sleeves to get the nuts and bolts done.
- Financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning expertise.
- Ability to operate at both a strategic and tactical level—comfortable rolling up your sleeves to solve problems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail.
- Excellent communication skills, able to distill complex financial information into actionable insights.
- Mindset:
- Entrepreneurial spirit with a passion for building from scratch.
- Highly adaptable. Thrives in a fast-paced, scrappy environment. Comfortable with ambiguity and able to operate effectively with limited direction.
- Low ego, high ownership—willing to dive into the details while maintaining strategic oversight.
- High integrity and a strong moral compass.
- Culture Fit: Alignment with our motto of hiring people who are smart, nice, and get things done. Ability to work effectively in a remote-first, distributed team environment. Collaborative, proactive, and excited to work across multiple teams and industries.
What We Offer:
- The unique opportunity to shape the future of Shaper Capital and its portfolio companies.
- A dynamic, fast-paced environment where your impact is immediate and meaningful.
- Competitive salary, equity, and benefits package.
- The chance to work alongside some of the brightest minds in venture and entrepreneurship.
How to Apply: Please submit your resume and a cover letter outlining your relevant experience and why you are excited about this opportunity.
