
Mechanical / Systems Engineer
We are a well-funded startup based in San Francisco in the Dogpatch neighborhood next to UCSF Mission Bay. We have developed a proprietary ultrahigh throughput single cell platform to profile the immune system to find better targets for immunotherapy. We are looking for a mechanical/systems engineer to join our interdisciplinary team. The candidate should have deep expertise in microfluidics, mechanical systems and instrumentation, and be able to execute on independent projects. He/she is expected to adapt quickly and communicate well, especially in a fast-paced startup environment. The candidate will collaborate with other microfluidics engineers and be part of an exciting journey.

Responsibilities:
- Designing and fabricating microfluidic systems, devices, and tools.
- Working in a cleanroom environment.
- Utilizing microfabrication techniques.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to design and test subsystems and specific functionalities of microfluidic devices.
- Analyzing critical test results to inform design decisions and develop verification test architectures.
- Documenting and reporting key experimental results, test plans, and design choices.
- Designing and developing mechanical parts and assemblies, with careful consideration for mechanical design and materials.
- Collaboratively working within multi-disciplinary teams to define requirements for new and current designs.
- Studying, fabricating, and testing product designs.
Skills and Qualifications
- BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a relevant field with experiences in microfluidics systems or instrumentation.
- Hands-on experience with microfluidics devices, experimental design and analysis, and/or electrical/mechanical testing and debugging
- Experience with at least two of the following areas: control systems, system integration, microfluidics systems, injection molding, and optical systems
- High proficiency in using 3D CAD and CAM software; OnShape and MasterCAM are preferred.
- Experience in CNC machining, casting, and injection molding.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Comfortable operating machine shop tools and equipment.
- Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, and personable manner.
- High energy and enthusiasm for working in a startup environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Hands-on, proactive approach.
Preferred (but not mandatory)
- Proficient in generating mechanical drawings
- Ability to independently identify design problems and propose solutions
- Capability to work within a multi-disciplinary team including immunology and molecular biology
- Knowledgeable in various manufacturing techniques and processes
- Experienced in injection molded part design
- Understanding of software programming or electrical engineering design including Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB or other programming languages, and/or an understanding of electrical circuits
- Experience working with cells
- Prior experiences working at startups
Job Type: Full-time, Mon-Fri
Pay: $80,000 - $105,000 in salary depending on depth of expertise + bonuses + equity
