Underwriting Intern

San Francisco, CA

About Shepherd

Shepherd is an MGU platform purpose-built to launch and scale commercial insurance products with speed, efficiency, and precision. Leveraging AI to eliminate administrative underwriting, we streamline workflows and drive faster decision-making, while differentiating through proprietary, industry-specific data that enhances risk selection.

We’re building a platform that incentivizes clients to adopt high-impact risk management tools—bridging the gap between available technology and its widespread underuse across construction and other commercial markets.

To date, Shepherd has raised $20M+ from top tier VCs including Y-Combinator, Susa Ventures, Spark Capital, Costanoa Ventures, Era Ventures, Greenlight RE and Intact Ventures.

About You

As an Underwriting Intern at Shepherd, you'll play a key role in supporting the underwriting team with day-to-day operational tasks and assisting with strategic projects that provide valuable insights for the business. Over the course of this 8-week internship, you will gain hands-on experience in underwriting with the commercial construction team. Additionally, you will work on a research-focused side project that will culminate in a final presentation to the team, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate independent thinking and deliver a tangible project outcome. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to learn about the intersection of insurance, technology, and innovation in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment. It is designed to be an impactful learning experience that contributes to both your personal and professional growth, providing you with real-world exposure to the underwriting process and a tangible project to present to your peers.

This is an onsite role based in San Francisco.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the underwriting team with operational tasks, such as account modeling, broker triage, and document organization.
  • Support the underwriting team by performing research on industry trends, AI applications in insurance, and other emerging technologies.
  • Take ownership of a side project focused on “Emerging Use Cases of AI in Insurance,” with a focus on real-world case studies and practical applications.
  • Prepare and deliver a final presentation on the AI use cases research, offering insights and recommendations for how these innovations could impact the business.

  • Strong interest in the insurance industry with a desire to explore the application of emerging technologies such as AI in underwriting.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

Race & Ethnicity Definitions

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

An "Armed forces service medal veteran" means a veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces service medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12985.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
